What are 3 concrete examples of a company policy or practice that offers ways to ease such tensions between work and family. How do such policies influence the employees? What do such concessions mean for the employer? And what does the tension between work and family reveal about our culture?

1. Flex time. If I need to come in later or leave earlier, allow me to make up the time on another day during the same work week.
2. On-sight daycare. Of course this is not always possible for smaller companies, but would be welcome for working parents.
3. Work from home options. Can some of the work be done off site effectively? Less overhead for space needed and family demands can be handled at the same time.

Our culture puts family on the back burner. Cheap labor that comes in to work for less, exporting the businesses to other countries for tax purposes or cheaper labor are some reasons we need to compete for available jobs. We are not allowed to put our family first because we need to fight for the jobs that feed them!
