For immigrants I am probably guessing through work. Even if it is a low wage job, if you are working with others who's native tounge is English I think it helps people learn English.

Immersion, yes. A class might help you with the basics, but day-to-day communication with english speakers - while avoiding falling back on your native language - is the best way to really improve rapidly.

if they have internet access they can try this website: http://www.english180.com/

It is completely FREE so they don't have to worry about cost. And it is really interactive and fun, so they won't get bored. It has podcasts, videos, games, interactive lessons, quizzes, etc. so there is plenty to learn. You can even register for free to track your progress.

Also, they should definitely practice a lot. I know a lot of people who just stay within the comfort of their own home and speak only their native language with people around them. They should definitely try to interact more with other people in English, maybe take a course or join a group, like a club that shares their interests. They can also try to play sports with people they don't know, like basketball, so that they interact with people who speak English. It will definitely speed up the process.

Good luck.

Take ESL classes, socialize with English speaking people, read, watch the news (English), etc...but most importantly...have the desire in your heart to want to learn it.
