Good question.

Therefore, Paul referred to the original Christian practice of "baptizing for the dead" (1 Cor. 15: 29), which no organized Christian church does today, except for Mormons.

...Which benevolent practice, by the way, certain representatives of Judaism have totally freaked out over. How dare Mormons try to save their Jewish ancestors! ;)

Which shows that even if there is a perfect answer to your question, people still don't want it.

Jesus did not go to Hell. He lived a perfect life. He committed no sins. He is the only person essentially to have earned his way into heaven. The Jewish ancestors of Christianity will not go to hell, if they obeyed God. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for all sin. The Jewish people used to make animal and grain sacrifices for their sins. If they loved God and sacrificed appropriately, they could go to heaven. Jesus made animal sacrifice obsolete.

Jesus spent three days in "paradise" Heaven in a part of hell preaching to the "captives" he set free those that believed. He took back the keys of death from the devil and He now decides who goes to the father. So all have had a chance to believe or not. People that lived before Jesus were believing He would come and that is still faith in God and Jesus.
