I have heard about huge fees for too-heavy luggage on ryanair. I am wondering if I can take things out of the luggage and throw them away in order to meet the weight limit. Or, once they have weighed the luggage, am I stuck paying for it no matter what?

No, you can certainly throw things away to make your bag lighter for check in -- but it would be nice if you didn't have to!

Ryanair allows you to have one small piece of carry-on luggage, which mustn't weigh more than 10kg, and must be smaller than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Therefore, if you packed your carry-on bag very lightly, you could feasibly transfer stuff from your checked luggage to your carry-on, and that might lighten the load just a little.

(It's worth noting for the future that on some airlines, and some flights, you can take two pieces of hand luggage on board -- in the past, I've brought a strong plastic carrier bag with me, in addition to my one piece of hand luggage, so that if I need to take things from my checked bag to make it lighter, I can at least carry them on board as hand luggage. Some airlines will even give you a plastic bag to do just that. I usually find that removing books makes a huge difference!)

So yes, you could throw your stuff away, or you could see if there's room for it in your hand luggage. Alternatively, if someone's going to be coming to the airport with you to drop you off, you could always take out the non-essentials from your checked baggage and send stuff you don't need home with them.

Finally, I guess you could just suck it up and pay the extra charges -- it would be five pounds fifty (or eight Euros -- about USD$11) per extra kilo. You're allowed to check 15kg of baggage, so you might want to weigh your bag before you leave for the airport, and figure out how much extra you might be charged. It will add up, sure, but remember that your Ryanair ticket itself was probably pretty cheap -- and that's why! On low-budget carriers like this, you might have to pony up a little extra to bring everything you want.

Hope this is helpful, and good luck! Have a safe flight and a great trip.

Do it right in the first place - do not throw anything away!
