We were told the same thing at the border a few years ago. Since then, we have married, my vehicle is still registered in the U.S. as I am in the immigration process. Hubby drives my vehicle all the time, with and without me. Three years ago he was involved in an accident (not his fault), and nothing was mentioned to him about his being a Canadian and driving an Americans car. Two months ago he got a speeding citation, and again, nothing was mentioned in regards to the vehicle he was driving. In both incidents he was in the vehicle without me.

However, going across the border with him driving is another issue altogether ... we tried it once, coming in to Canada, I was sitting next to him, and we had more hassle at the border then than ever before or after. Never again will we try that one!

I have not found the law regarding this, but as I said, we were told the same, and that if we were ever pulled over my vehicle would be impounded ... well, in two incidents attended by police (as mentioned above), this did not happen, nor was it even an issue.

Who told you that? It is absolute nonsense, as long as you have the minimum Canadian required insurance (your insurance company can give you a Canadian insurance certificate to verify that should you be asked at the border). However, she cannot drive your car into Canada from the States unaccompanied by you, although Canada Customs can give a 3 day waiver for reason. This is a stupid old law designed to catch auto thieves and to protect the domestic auto market.

No it is not.
My first marriage was to an American. We switched cars one time and crossed the border.
The customs officers held my car until I came to pick it up. I was politely told since I was driving an American registered vehicle in Canada I was not insured and could be ticketed for driving without valid insurance.
We switched vehicles and went on our way. I followed up with an old high school buddy who was a police officer and he also said it was not legal due to the different insurance regulations. You can rent a car in another country but you cannot drive it across a border.

As far as I know a person with a valid drivers license can operate some else car as long as that person give their consent, some body was pulling your legs, may be they were jealous about you bean an American and have a Canadian girl friend.

Thats BS, the Border people aren't cops & I seriously doubt many of our fine officials could find there a*s with both hands.

Sure she can. I'm a Canadian and I can rent a car in the US and drive it. I can buy a car in the States, in fact I have. As long as you have insurance.

Besides, have you seen any cops lately?

If she has a drivers license, there should'nt be a problem. You can put her on your insurance policy...
