The Psalms are a great source of comfort. Also prayer!

If you are not a member of a Bible believing Church - you should find one. Here is a list of good denominations.

Let me enlarge on your analogy of eating and growth. You will remember, I am sure, that Christians are compared to sheep, and there is much rich learning that can be had from thinking about this concept.

First, sheep are ruminants; they "chew the cud." What this means is that the first pass through of the food is rather quick - the food is chewed and swallowed. It ferments briefly in the first stomach, then is regurgitated, very thoroughly chewed and swallowed into the second stomach.

Second, sheep who are pastured do better than sheep in a feedlot environment. This is because a feedlot is generally a bare dirt environment and fills with feces and parasistes. Sheep who are led to pasture do much better, provided they don't remain in the same field for too long, or they will run into the same problem as feedlot fed sheep. Part of the reason for this is there is exercise is involved in getting out to pasture, finding, selecting and chewing food, etc. Feedlot animals do not get this benefit.

Here's how this analogy plays out. A feedlot Chrisitan is one who relies on prepackaged, stale food distributed by a pastor. A pasture fed sheep is led into a topic either by a properly hearted study leader, or else by the Holy Spirit. The topic is not explained to you in any great detail, rather it is up to you and the study leader to discuss the topic, bat it around and ask questions. This is the "first chewing." It is important to rest at this point without moving onto something new so that the digestion process can start. PS 23:2 He makes me LIE DOWN in green pastures, he leads me beside STILL WATERS. If this step is skipped and you go on to another topic too quickly, you have not allowed it to begin breaking down and "fermenting." Next, bring it back up and go over it again to "chew the cud." Be very thorough about it and ask questions like "how can I apply this? In what ways am I coming up short?" etc. It is important that you begin walking out the faith by DOING something with what you are learning, and unlike a sheep, you have some impact about where and how the nourishment is supplied to your spiritual muscles. Make a concerted effort to walk out what you have read.

Remember the parasites I mentioned? These are creatures which live in the gut of the sheep and rob it of nutrients and energy - they literally feed off of what the sheep has eaten. A well fed sheep can still be malnourished if it has parasites. Examine your life and see if you have some sins or mental attitudes which might be sapping your strength.

Also, remember that in quietness you will find strength, but if all you ever experience is quietness without activity, you will develop lethargy and spiritual obesity. You need both periods of rest and reflection as well as doing things like feeding the poor, preaching etc. Don't overlook the possibility that your personality might be involved in this. Are you prone to depression or melancholy? Self-diagnosis may not be the best thing here, so I would suggest seeking a "wisdom council." This should be a group of Christian friends. Here's the procedure: you talk, they listen. You talk some more, they listen some more. They are NOT allowed to advise, but are free to ask questions like, "why do you feel that way? What other things have you tried in an effort to feel better?"

Lastly, spiritual growth is given by God. A plant doesn't have to instruct itself to grow; it grows by virtue of being planted in a climate and soil to which it is accustomed. Jesus said, "Abide in me and you will bear much fruit..."

I pray that you find this helpful!
In Christ,
Tom

If you are serious, it sounds like you are going through a crisis of the soul, or what they call the dark night of the soul. If you are confident that what you read in the bible is right for you then I would suggest that you talk to your Pastor, Priest, Minister, or Rabbi.
If you are not finding the comfort you need in the bible then try other books. There are many paths to Spirituality. Check out some books on Buddhism, there are many books on Spirituality, or try some of the various Pagan traditions, or simply try meditation.
Meditation can be very helpful in finding yourself and helping you to grow spiritually.
There are many ways to meditate, the simplest one is by concentrating on your breath and letting your mind wander where it wants to go, it may bring you some inspiration. There are also huge numbers of books and CD's of guided meditations, these can be helpful too.
Good luck to you, it is a hard place you are in, I hope you find your way out.

i'm glad that you are thirsty for the word of God. There may be other things you don't know. Remember to stand firm in what you believe in especially in this everchanging world. Consider the little things you do, say, eat etc. I thought i was right with the Lord and them i learnt that some of the music i listened to was actually one of Satan's traps, then i learnt that the holidays we celebrate today are not christian (like christmas& santa/satan, valentines day etc...)and even the thigs we posses (like jewelery or maybe the clothes we wear). we can never be too close to God. in a sence that we are human and we are not perfect. study the Bible, and pray about it...

Hear are to of my favourite verses in the Bible

Philipians 4:13 which says "I can so all things through Christ who strengthens me"

and

James 4:7 Submit yourself therefor to God,resist the devil and he shall flee from you.
God Bless,
always remember, the best is yet to come....

Reading the Bible like reading a novel will not provide the answers to life’s questions.

To grow spiritually in you Faith you need to study the Bible. It is not as easy as it sounds. Then too Bible Study by your self is nigh on impossible. You need to do it in the company of fellow believers. Check at your church I am sure they have Bible Study classes for all ages. There are also a lot of Bible Study classes on the Internet complete with audio/video, notebooks and online chat room classes.

Prayer is a good choice also.

Make sure you offer all of your food to God first before you eat it.It should be vegetarian because that is what Christ originally taught but king Constantine changed so many things in eh bible to fit his own idea and to control the people. For the original New Testament before Constantine changed it google gospleofthenazirenes.com If you are empty that means you are not pleasing God yet. If you are sincere read The actual new Testament Christ taught vegetarianism, karma, reincarnation, and no one goes to hell eternally. No one can understand the unlimited mercy of the Lord until they understand the above truths. Also see an Ayurvedic Doctor.

What you are experiencing I believe is common to many people who choose to follow God and and accept Jesus as their savior. First allow me to ask, are you passionate about God? I don't mean going to church every Sunday and reading the bible consistently. What I mean is an all encompassing love for God, every good work you do, every breath you breath, every word you speak being done to represent God faithfully as a christian.

I myself am trying to make God the center of my life because I truly believe that until I make Him the center of my very being I will never be content. I hope you can somehow work through this and you feel full of God's great love.

You are experiencing what we in the Ministry call "Spiritual Burn Out". People think that because you are a Christian you never have bad times, that you are always on the mountain top, that things are always Rosy and so on. People forget that just because you are a Christian you are still human. Being human you experience human emotions. Stay strong and keep looking up, you may be in the Valley but remember God is still there and He will be there when you need Him most. You may wake up tomorrow with a song in your heart and a smile on your face, but if not, just remember God is Still your God. I will keep you in my prayers. God Bless You

American culture specifically tends to put too much emphasis on our feelings. I feel happy today, I feel sad, etc. The Christian faith is one of promises kept and believed on, even (and especially) in the presence of adversity. We are sinful creatures who hate God by our fallen nature, but redeemed Christians war with the new and the old natures. Keep thinking and praying, and rejoicing, on the promises and soon you will "feel" better. And even if you never do, the promises stand true.

The void you feel in your heart is God missing from your life. We were created to have a relationship with God. Because of our sin, we are separated from that relationship. Even worse, our sin will cause us to be separated from God for all of eternity, this life and the next (Romans 6:23; John 3:36).
How can this problem be solved? Jesus is the way! Jesus took our sin upon Himself (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus died in our place (Romans 5:8), taking the punishment that we deserve. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, proving His victory over sin and death (Romans 6:4-5). Why did He do it? Jesus answered that question Himself, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). Jesus died so that we could live. If we place our faith in Jesus, trusting His death as the payment for our sins - all of our sins are forgiven and washed away. We will then have our spiritual hunger satisfied. The lights will be turned on. We will have access to a fulfilling life. We will know our true best friend and good shepherd. We will know that we will have life after we die - a resurrected life in heaven for eternity with Jesus!
Become part of God's family today. Acknowledge your sinfulness, and express your faith in these words:
"God, I have sinned against You. (Romans 3:23) I've followed my own way and refused to give You the right to rule in my life. (Romans 3:10-12) I recognize I am separated from You and cannot rescue myself. I do believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I accept the truth of the Scriptures? that His death on the cross paid my sin-debt in full. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) And I ask You to forgive me of my sins. (1 John 1:9) By faith, I receive You, Lord Jesus, as my personal Savior from this moment on."

Paul said don't trust your senses. The enemy of your soul wants you to believe that you are empty, when in fact you are full. Celebrate! You have life, and more abundantly! You have Someone that will NEVER leave you or forsake you. You have Someone who SINGS over you with JOY.
(This is all in the Bible)
