That is a very good question. I'm sure that an Apostolic/Pentecostal church can seem confusing to someone new. We believe there is more to being saved than speaking in tongues. Jesus said we must be born again of the water and of the spirit to enter into the kingdom of heaven. The disciples were told to wait for the comfortor to come to them before Jesus ascended into heaven. When the believer assembled together in the upper room they were filled with the Holy Spirit and the evidence of their experience was speaking in tongues. When the crowd heard them speaking in tongues they were confused too. Peter explained to them that this was what was promised by the prophet Joel in the Old Testiment. The crowd wanted what the believers had. They asked what they must do and Peter told them to repent, to be baptized in the name of Jesus, and they would recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost. Everytime that someone recieved the Holy Ghost in the Bible, they spoke in tongues. See, the tongue is the most unrully member of the body. If you can surrender all of yourself to God, you will recieve the Holy Ghost and speak with tongues. There is another way that tongues is used in the church. It is for edification to the body of Christ. When God wants to speak to the church someone will speak out in tongues and it will be followed by an interpretation. If you would like some resources to study this further, I can recommend you do a search for The New Life Experience by David Bernard. He has written many books and has some online. I hope this has helped you understand a little better. By the way, I realize Pentecostals worship more enthusiasticly than many denominations. Keep in mind that David danced before the Lord. He got so carried away with his worship and praise that his wife laughed and mocked him. Worship and praise should be expressed emotionally. God gave us emotion for a reason. David was a man after Gods own heart, even though his life wasn't lived as uprightly as it should be. God made us to worship him. Think of it this way, you get excited at a ball game, or watching TV, or winning something. Isn't God more exciting than all those things? I'll pray God helps you with your search for truth.

1 Corinthians 13:8 says tongues shall cease. And they did for a long time. It was started up again by false prophets. It was a sign gift for the early church. I was involved with pentecostal churches for a few years and did the so-called "speaking in tongues" thing. It's basically self-hypnosis. I'm sorry if this is offensive, but I must say what I believe the truth to be. When I was in the pentecostal churches, the pastor would mention maybe one verse from the Bible, then go off on some tangent.

Pentecostals do not think it is necessary to speak in tongues to be saved. Many do think it is the initial evidence of the second infilling of the Holy Spirit. (One reason I no longer participate in that particular denomination)
And as you noted, a lot of my experience was chaotic. No interpreter, no orderly direction. I think that is not as God would have it according to His word. They sometimes try to make a distinction between speaking in tongues to communicate to the whole assembly and "praying in tongues " which is clearly more about a personal conversation with the Lord. For many people it is unsettling.
I have to admit that a lot of times I felt a greater awareness of the presence of the Holy Spirit while in a Pentecostal church. And sometimes I do miss that powerful sense.
I do not think it means that they are in complete error, but would do well to consider a little more order.
I sometimes wonder if there is a charismatic church which follows the order described by Paul in Corinthians.

First, Pentecostal churches do not believe that you need to speak in tongues in order to be saved. Tongues are a special language between a person and God and no all Pentecostals speak in tongues. Tongues were first used in the New Testament by the apostles when Jesus gave them the Holy Spirit. Secondly, where in the bible does it say that church should be orderly, I do not remember that anywhere.
In Psalms it does say shout and praise the Lord with thanksgiving. We need to celebrate our faith not mourn it. I hope I was helpful.

tongues are a sign to the unbeliever, they are the initial evidence of recieving the holy ghost, and sometimes they are given to be interpreted. the bible says lest you are born again of the water and spirit you cannot enter into the kingodom of God, when you are filled with the holy ghost you will speak in tongues as a sign that you have it. (just like in the book of acts) the bible says for the promise is unto you and to all those that are a far off. (meaning they are for today) tongues did not end back then they had just started. in the book of corinthians they were talking to the corinth church when they are talking about speaking in tongues and interpreting them. i praise the lord that i am a tongue talking, water baptised in Jesus' name, holy ghost filled apostolic pentecostal believer. EVERYTHING i believe is found in the bible- which is a great way to believe because if someone wants to argue with you they are arguing with God's word in the bible.

You are right that this is out of God's order. There must be an interpreter (1 Cor. 12) as for all we know, people could be cursing God and we not know it. I don't know about them thinking its a necessity but its just like any error prevailing the the so called protestant churches today worshiping on Sunday instead of the biblically sanctified Sabbath (Saturday = seventh day) like the catholic church. This day of worship was changed by the catholic church and not by Jesus as Jesus himself kept the Sabbath ("And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on THE Sabbath day, and stood up for to read." Luke 4:16 & "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for THE Sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of THE Sabbath." Mark 2:27,28).

God is a God of order and not of confusion (1 Cor. 14:33) and if any cannot understand and there are no interpreters, we are not to speak in tongues.

Speaking in tongues is not a pretense, and a true God fearing christian has God's spirit inside them. That is the almighty speaking through his people, and it carries a message to everyone of his followers. if you are inside the same church again, listen to the interpretation that is given from God's own word! it is always a good message!!!!!!!!

Did you ever read in the Bible that when the Apostles spoke in tongues, it was so people could understand in order to be converted? In a Pentecostal church, it is a bunch of gibberish.

Because tongues is a sign of the Holy Ghost for those that believe not.
