A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Run Spybot and Adaware weekly.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaw...

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Now lets clean up your registry.

Run RegScrubXP weekly. Run Cleanup every time you log off.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it every again.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php....

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

http://www.cablenut.com/

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All programs are FREE!

After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.

First You should see if there are any viruses or spyware. If you have a Virus Scanner use it. Viruses will slow you down.
For Spyware download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware Personal SE, it is free and it is the best at removing spyware.
To speed up your comp do a Disk Clean Up it will give you a calculation of how much space each selected item is taking up, and will give you information about what is ok to remove, it will clean up a lot. But it won't do anything to your files or OS.

Do a disk defragmentation, it will compress all loose files and speed up your access times.

Also you should do a Check Disk, to do this right click on your C: Drive and click Properties then Tools then Check for Errors it will prompt you after you click ok if you want to reschedule it on start up click yes and restart the computer. NOTE: IT will need about an hour or two to finish checking, and it will fix any corrupted registries in your drive.

Also get a registry cleaner, it will fix corrupted registries that might be causing crashes or slow downs. But this is only a suggestion.

Remove any unused programs that aren't need and check for updates

1. Install more ram.

2. Keep the main drive uncluttered. You should always have as much free space left over as you have occupied. For instance if you root drive is a forty gig drive, never put more than 20 gigs worth of stuff in it.

3. Do not defrag the drive unless you really have to.

4. Leave the desk top uncluttered. Learn to work with aliases rather than put big files on the desk top. Clean it up regularly.

5. Make sure your power source is even. My best advice, get a battery back-up surge protector. These days so often the power grid surges. Irregular power burns up a computer.

that's the best advice I can offer.

Using registry cleaner can fix your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may are some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!
Now you can find top 5 registry cleaner here:
http://www.computerspeed.info/index.php?t=cspeed ,From there you can download and scan totall FREE.

Hope that can help you

1. Reinstall Operating System from scratch.

1a. If you don't want to do that then:
disable all programs running in the background
Do a full defrag of the hard drive

2. Add as much RAM to the system as it can handle or you can afford.

3. If gaming, apply step #2 to the video card.

1. uninstall programs and games you don't want
2. do some spyware and virus scans. (go to www.download.com to get a spyware or virus scanner. you could also get a general 'pc tune-up' kind of program that does lots of little things to help speed it up)
3. click start > run > and type in 'msconfig'. click run. choose the 'selective startup' option, and uncheck 'load startup items'. (this will prevent unnecessary programs from running in the background when you turn your computer on)
4. if you still feel that it isn't running as well as it could, consider having more RAM installed (take it to an electronics or computer store)

that is likely the quickest way to get things running well.

tools> internet options>
delete cookies
delete temporary files
delete history
should do this on a regular basis[ almost daily]
You can also use defragmentation>
start> programs> accessories> system tools>
defragment.
should be done at least twice a month
You will notice a big difference. Hope this helped.
