It doesn't have to be something big. Something as thoughtful as a card is great. A few more ideas would be...
~Paid day off,
~If your provider has kids a free day of babysitting provided by you
~a hand made gift made by you and your child
~vouchers or gift certificates to restaurants, salons or even a toy store. It's expensive to keep up to date & safe toys and materials available for the kids

A simple thank you is what most providers like to hear. I am a provider myself and most people don’t understand how underappreciated we are made to feel. No matter what you give, do or say, please just remember to let your provider know that you do appreciate them.

Try to find out what your provider does for fun and run any idea by at least one other person. I have greatly enjoyed book store gift cards, dinner gift cards, etc. I did not appreciate the diet pills (I'm smaller than average so it didn't even make sense) or the wrinkle cream (I was 24 at the time).

Many providers spend a great deal of their own money on supplies for the classroom. Maybe you could ask what the teacher would buy for the class if she had the money and then buy it and donate it to the class. The teacher gets something she wants and all of the children will benefit as well!

I teach a four year old class and I would appreciate a gift card of some sort. Maybe a store that everyone loves. There are so many gifts out there that we teachers just don't have the shelf room for. We would much rather have something that we could/would use and that would be practical. Thanks for thinking.

A massage! Seriously, I've been a preschool teacher for 5 years and the best gift I've ever received was a trip to the spa. We nurture all day long, and always love a little nurturing ourselves. Thank you for being thoughtful enough to ask!

A potted plant for summer, a $10 gift card to a caribou, target, or a bookstore. Passes to the local movie theater or swimming pool. Anything at all is nice and appreciated.
