It is not as friendly as it was when you were last there. If you go to the French Quarter, you do not need to move to the side streets with money. Some of the areas are okay to travel in, but others are still a war zone and I would not go there without a loaded gun.
It is still very dicey as the police will not, can not, protect you.
I would take a cab and not risk parking a rental car.

New Orleans is a safe city. If you are not doing drugs or going to buy drugs you will be safe. Most of the crime here is isolated to areas with a minority population. I work in the French Quarter at least 3 days a week and I park my car there on a regular basis, even overnight, and nothing has happened to it. You will be safe to rent a car. You sound like you should know the area well since you went to school here so you know which areas to stay away from.

bus drivers ar enot happy right now, so i would rent a car and rive into the city, if you used to go to Tulane you should knwo the streets pretty well. New Orleans hasn't changed much, you will see hurricane damage, but you will not get shot or mug or anything unless you go looking for it. use the same sense as you had before katrina, nothing is different except for vacant houses, 98% of the crime in the city is in heavey drug trafficing areas

i'm a close-by. I presently stay a sprint extra inland than earlier Katrina. We rode out the hurricane. do no longer permit any placed up Katrina techniques be a undertaking. Katrina is now portion of the soul of the city. It makes a pass to much greater dramatic once you notice what befell and how issues are actually. New Orleans is a might desire to SEE.

I would rent the car. Public transportation is not always the best in New Orleans, unless you are on one of the street car lines that are still running.
As for the crime; Unless you are buying or selling crack, the odds of anything happening, are no greater than any other large city. Don't buy, or sell, crack!

I would rent the car.....and keep your doors locked. New Orleans is infested with crime and is now the murder capitol of America. Mayor Nagin says its all Bush's fault.
