Because many "fundamentalists" are not Christians. They do not follow the ways of Christ.
That doesn't mean that Christ's message is wrong. It only means that people are sinful and many who think they are saved are not.
When we genuinely put our faith in Christ, our lives are changed. We will still sin, but we work every day towards living like Christ.
I'm sorry that you were soured by that experience. Its especially bad when those in leadership positions in the church fall, because they bring down many with them. But judge Christianity by Christ and by God, not by those that say they follow it.
Would you judge science by a scientist who constantly followed superstition rather than scientific methods? No. Niether judge Christianity by false converts.
God bless!

Most fundamentalists I know believe that all men are sinners and in need of forgiveness, so that includes them too.
That's not a hypocritical belief.
The only hypocrites are the ministers themselves who have let the congregation down.
By the way, I'm not an evangelical I'm a Roman Catholic.
A true Christian calls a sin a sin wherever he finds it - within or without! I am a very great sinner myself and avail myself of the sacraments of Confession and Communion frequently.

I've seen worse from pastors and church members... And that's ok... They're only human too. I have it set in my mind, even though I hate that individual as a person, as a pastor, I have respect for him, b/c when he's on the pulpit, It's not his words, but God's words....
Fundamentalists point fingers because they don't want to reflect on their own wrongs and sins... So that's why they point and bash others... I am a Christian, but I would never consider myself a fundamentalist.

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 3:23-26
No human is free from making really bad choices!! If so we would just be puppets on a string! Even those who preach God's Word for a living are not safe from sin! Each day is a battle to make better choices then the day before. Just because someone confesses to believe Jesus to be their King does not mean its true. No body can judge others, they should not even judge themselves! I believe the Bible is the true Word of God, but I still make choices that I know I shouldn't make--that's is what being a Christian is like "we are not perfect just forgiven"!! We are saved not by what we do but what Jesus did for us! No other religion can say this!

People are human and we are all sinners. I don't think it matters what church it happened it, it had to be a shock to the congregation. Not all fundamentalists point fingers, but its easier to uncover someone elses sin, than your own.

ok. I was at a baptist church and was told that once you are saved you are saved no ifs ands or buts about it. So young and naive me asked -
so if you are saved and you go out and kill someone, will you still go to heaven
the pastor looked me straight in the eyes and said yes
NOW of course, I understand, that the pastor was wrong and it doesn't work like that. The lesson here is that the problem isn't with the religion, it is with the people. And it is just not with the Baptist church, it is everywhere, because people everywhere are sinners.
Noone is perfect.
what you have to do is find a faith that is good for you and a church that is good for you and practice that faith. if the church that you are in is not healthy find one that is. don't sit around and complain about it.

Not one but 2 or our lay deacons in my parish church (I'm Catholic) had affairs, divorced their wives, and married the other woman. One did it while the wife was in the hospital dying of cancer! And, my best friend's former sister in law, looks suspiciously like she's having an affair, that's been going on for years, with her former parish priest. Yet she disapproves of couples living together or using fertility drugs to get pregnant.
It happens all over, but it is relatively rare. We just have to keep the faith.

It happens a lot. Men of the cloth aren't immune to lust or sins, they're people too. Reverends, Priests, and Pastors are people who make mistakes. I've seen cases where Pastors abuse young women, cheat on their wives and beat them, and steal money from the church fund so they can pay their gambling or alchohol or their lovers.

We are all hypocritical in our own special way James.
There are many things that religious people do that drive folks away from God. Are you going to allow human sin to separate you from God? I hope not.
God allows in His Word stories of people who make mistakes, some repent and are reconciled to Him, some don't.
Redemption is the key here. You can spend a lifetime chronicling the mistakes that church leaders make, or you can spend that time reading and studying the bible. I choose to spend my time reading and studying the bible. That way I can see how God wants ME to live MY life.
Try it, you'll become closer to God when you do.

Fundamentalists aren't the only hypocrites.
One just has to look into a mirror. We've all fallen short of the Glory of God.
