Vietnam and Iraq are not all that similar. Everyone is comparing modern day Iraq to the old day Vietnam, and they are wrong. Vietnam was an actual war, and was pretty much a living h ell. Casulties around and over 50,000 within them years. Iraq is not really a war right now. We went to war with Iraq, as in the country, in the early 2000's just proceding 911. We won the war due to surrender, and also with the capture of Saddam Hussein. Now we are preventing a civil war between the Sunnies and the Shiites... not at war with Iraq. We are fighting the Terrorist insurgents and helping Iraq regain it's government and get back up on it's own feet. Once Iraq has a government set up, and we know it wont collapse as soon as we leave, we will leave. Vietnam we had an actual enemy, and it was a real war. We were fighting groups of men with hunting rifles, some soldiers, and getting mangled by diseases, animals, and landmines. It was a pretty much hide and seek hell for the GI's and no real way of winning the war unless we were to use nuclear bombs, and WMD's of which our government wouldnt allow the Army and Airforce to use. So to save lives, and time we left. We accomplished many objectives, killed many insurgent leaders, and took down their dictatorship (Saddams). We will leave Iraq as soon as Iraq is able to govern themselves without invasion by Iran, Kuwait, or breaking into Civil War.

Vietnam didn't have oil. It was a was a strategic war, fought for global positioning, and perhaps principles and convictions. Iraq is all about money and oil wealth, which ironically never came. However, controlling the flow of oil for the worlds 4 largest producer still counts for something, even if its bleeding your pockets dry. If the US leaves now, there is a good possibility that the oil being pumped in Iraq will be redirected to supply Chines factories.

Why bother to fight at all. Just surrender to anyone who dislikes or envies us enought to slink around and murder our citizens. As I read some of the questions and answers on this site I am no longer sure it is worth the struggle.

I take it you don't remember the Fall of Saigon.

Abandoning the South Veitnamese to the VC was one of the great mistakes of American history. Why repeat it. Again. (we already did this in Iraq once, already, left the Kurds who allied with us in GWI to be slaughtered by Sadam).
