As long as they ask nicely, I don't think it's rude at all. They're probably genuinely curious. If they come up to you and ask, "WTF is that on your head...a cheap wig?" then yes...that IS rude.
Also, if your various hairstyles are "different" (different colors, odd cuts, etc.) it's only normal for people to be curious.

Yes. I think it's rude and I would personally never ask someone that, unless it was a very close friend or family member.
It's funny, though, it's happened to me a few times when I compliment a girl's hair and she says "It's FAKE!" or "It's a weave," or wig! Some people don't seem to mind offering the information freely. I am almost always surprised because sometimes it just looks so real...

I always thought it was kind of rude for people who are not friends with you to ask that of you. The thing is they don't realize that it is rude, I don't think others mean any harm by asking but they need to understand that some things should not be asked, does not really matter and does not affect them in the least bit. I already know if they are wearing false teeth, breasts, nails and weaves, I don't find it necessary to tell them what they already know.

I don't think that asking about someone's hair is the same as asking about other body parts. It doesn't carry the same stigma that asking about, say, fake teeth might- simply because people play with their hair styles a lot, and that changing hair is not usually an indicator of something traumatic or taboo. Perhaps the asker here likes your hair style, and wants to know where you got it so that he/she can get their hair done by a good stylist. Or maybe he/she just likes the way you naturally look.

If your hairstyle is changing so drastically, I don't think it is rude to ask if it is real or not. Maybe they want to know where to buy it because they like the way it looks. I've had women ask if my breasts were real (they are) because they liked the way they looked.
I don't think it is too personal if you are putting it out there for everyone to see.

I agree with you! I think it is rude as well. If they want to know, they can discreetly find out by asking how you did your hair.
In my opinion, it's almost as bad as asking a large chested woman if her t i t s are real.

Yeah, it's rude, but I think those people's motives were probably pretty pure. If you hair looks cool, it's no wonder they want to know if it's really possible. If they ask, just tell them it's all real. If it's not, confess.

I take it as a compliment when people ask me if my hair is real. They often believe it's weave because it's so long.

Its all in how they ask you! If they are not being mean about it maybe they just want to know because they would like something similar...... how do you feel if someone asks where you got your outfit? usually flattered because someone else likes it right?
