For some people it does hurt-ask your dentist to apply something to numb the skin where he will give you the shot. I think it is the oil of clove but he maybe wintergreen. Don't worry, just ask; he/she will know what to do.

I think you mean "how bad does it hurt when you get a filling at the dentist?" On a scale of 1 - 10 it can hurt anywhere from 1 to 10. You say you're scared but on a scale of 1 - 10 how scared are you? Above 5 I would think scared enough to brush your teeth more regularly so you didn't get cavities? So you are probably not that scared.

Here's what you can do :
Take your fingernail, and push it into your gums. If you screamed or flinched, you're a downright sissy and will not be able to handle novocaine. If you were fine, then great! You'll be fine. It's not a great amount of pain, so I wouldn't panic.
Trust me, I've had two novocaine shots - - in the same day.

Im not going to lie you do feel a prick, but it is more like pressure than pain. If you press your finger on your gums you feel pressure. The initial prick is like a pinch, then just a little pressure on your gums. I cant remember but I think the freezing its lasts about 1 hour or so. Don't worry you will be fine, I promise!

Yes, they hurt. But the first one hurts the worse...sometimes they have to give you 2-4 shots to get you to go numb. You'll be fine. If you start to stress....ask your doc for a valium. :)
It'll start to wear off in an hour or two....and it may take as long as a day to not feel numb anywhere.

they can numb your gums with some stuff before the shot, so it doesn't hurt, maybe just pinches a bit. And then the novacaine lasts a few hours.

Novacaine is not too bad. You may feel an initial sting and a bit of pressure. I dont like them up in my front teeth. They usually put a numbing medicine on a cotton ball and stuff it in where they are going to inect the novacaine.

Of course it does, it's a needle in your mouth!
It's not that bad, though, the anticipation is WAAAAAAAY worse than the actual shot.
It only lasts for a few seconds, when they pull the needle out, it stops. In less than 20 minutes, you can't feel your mouth. Watch out for drooling when you're all done.
