My blood type is A Positive. I heard today that I may have problems when I'm pregnant if I have a child with someone of negative blood type, is this true?

Is there a blood type clashing that has to be taken into consideration?

Your blood type should be considered as two entities- the basic blood types (A,B,O, AB) and whether the Rhesus (Rh) antigen is present or not (positive or negative).

With regards to basic blood type, there is nothing to worry about ie. A, B, O blood groups- any combination can have baby together with no problems.

However, in pregnancies, the rhesus antigen is important. Potential problems arise only when the mother is Rh-negative and the father is Rh-positive. IF the baby is Rh-positive, and the mother is exposed to the baby's blood at any point during the pregnancy or birth, the mother becomes sensitized- mother's immune system will make antibodies that will attack this antigen if her body ever sees it again. Usually baby and mother's blood do not mix, but if there is minor trauma.and /bleed, they may mix a little. All this means, any future pregnancies with Rh-positive babies may cause the mother's immune system to step up and attack the baby's blood- and the baby will be hurt.

Sooo...this is a potential problem for Rh-negative mothers mating with Rh-positive fathers...but there are treatments that can prevent this, so as long as you see an Ob-gyn doctor while you are pregnant, they can EASILY take care and prevent this problem!

You might have problems if you were A-negative. There are no known problems associated with a mother having Rh-positive type blood, even if the father and the baby both have Rh-negative blood. Best wishes.

No big deal unless you are the negative parent. Then they give you a shot of something and it resolves itself.
