Navy is the brains of the military. If you score low on the ASVAB, you have the choice of being a Cook or well uhhh Cook.

Let me be honest here. I have been in the Navy for 10yrs and I was a recruiter for 3. The chances of you changing your job while you are in boot camp are pretty slim. While you are in boot camp there are some times when people who were supposed to show up for boot camp don't.They can do what is called a reclassification of some people because those peoples jobs still need to be filled. My advice to you is to ask your recruiter about changing your job before you leave for boot camp. Ask him about filling out a D.A.R. Since you are waiting to go to boot camp you are considered a depper and this form is called a DEP Action Request. You never know what kind of job may pop up that you are qualified for. You might have to change the date that you are leaving and if you leave earlier than you were supposed to you might even get a signing bonus( No Promises but it is possible) If you have any more questions please feel free to e-mail me. PS, CS is not a bad job, I had a friend that retired as a CS after 20yrs and went to work as a head chef in Las Vegas.

You can't change in basic from one rate to another. Go ahead CS (Formerly known as MS Mess Specialist). If you do well and work hard you can probably be sent to a culinary arts institute and get a certificate from the training there. Look at the Chef career and see how a real chef is paid vice a short line cook.

You are probably going to have to be a CS for around 2 years, unless you flunk out of your school and go to the fleet undesignated. I suggest you retake the ASVAB after a lot of study time, and if that doesn't help, then try to cross-rate to another rate after you've been in for a while. If it is an undermanned rate, your chances are good if you can pass the advancement test for the rate.

You will have to stay a cook for a while( I assume you are rated as a MS, that's what we called it when I was in the Navy) Anyway stay a cook for a while and see if you like it, I was not a fan but my buddy is still a cook in the navy to this day. and you get to go to fort Sam Huston in Texas for "A" school I had a lot of fun there.

none whatsoever. you cannot change ratings at Great Lakes unless you are found otherwise inelgible for it. and since you don;lt need a Clearance or perfvect color vision, there really isn;t anything t hat would DQ you from CS.

2 years after your training, you can apply to cross rate into a rating that is undermanned.

not much at all.
i was in for a few years
and a lot of people thought they could change it but none ever could
if i were you i would not join the navy
it is really bad being stuck on a ship it is like prison
i went in all excited i came out very disturbed
people segrgate into "prison gangs" that is the best way to describe it
you have more options then joining the military
really think this out
i wish the best for you
but you most likely will not be able to change your rate
i was a photographer's mate

You may have a chance when you go and sign for your rate in bootcamp. Tell the carrier counseler that is not whaat you want and that you want something else. not a dc deck seaman.

lol I thought the zoomies fancied themselves the brains of the military

look man - you sign a contract, that's it - you're stuck with it, and after all you agreed to it. Should have asked the recruiter if you could re-take it, and studied for it

Join the navy and see how many times the world can screw one person over and over again and again!
