If the mate is still there the other may come close then you must lure it indoor to catch or put in cage. Birds recognize their feeders/owners. Try the nearest trees in the neighborhood.

There is almost no chance of the bird coming back on its own. If it has been inside all its life it has no idea of direction or where it came from. Usually, they are simply lost and all you can do is post notices and hope that someone finds it. This does happen.

There is some other hope, however, if the bird left in the last couple of hours. You may be able to find it by yourself.

That will require both luck and knowledge of your bird.

If your bird regularly responds to certain sounds, like its name, or a whistle, you can go outside and call it, or whistle the notes it is used to hearing.

Look for trees nearby, as that is where other birds (wild birds) will be, and your bird will hear them and go there too. That is almost certain.

If you have a second bird at home, put it into a small cage and go for a walk. The second bird will begin calling as soon as it leaves its own familiar surroundings, and if the escaped one hears this familiar sound it will very probably respond to it.

I have actually done all of this, and it was successful.

First I looked for him and whistled the way he liked and when I found him he answered. He was several blocks from home, but high up in some trees, so I went back and got the other bird and a small cage.

When he heard the second bird he came down and landed on my shoulder and I just let him jump on my finger, put him inside the cage, and we went home.

It is heartbreaking to lose a pet. I wish you luck with this.

Is your cockatiel tame?
If so, don't give up. My bird ran away too, but he came back the day after! (The night he ran away, there was a terrible thunderstorm too, and our community has cats; they can survive! Give him a chance!)
If he's tame, try whistling to see if you can't call him back.
Also, set his cage outside. Put it somewhere you think he might recognize it. Our birdy flew right off and out of sight, but he still came back home and found his house again, and his cage. Cockatiels have fine memory, and they can and WILL remember what their house and home look like, and what their owners sound like!

Good luck!

Ususally exotic birds kept in a house do not come back if they fly away. Thats because they are not familiar with the outside (wild) world and they can get lost very easily. They are not familliar with their huge surroundings and can not adapt quick to the new aggressive environment.
So they may live and survive for a couple of days, but then they will die of "horror"!, stress, hunger, thirst, wild animals, etc.

If he flew away you may not see him again. I had a pet bird fly away and he never came back. You should put up lost poster signs and see if anyone finds him sitting on their porch. Sometimes they go back home, just not to their own home!
