why do you want a dog?

That depends. I think Great Danes make great apartment dogs - despite their size, they fold up into nice, neat packages.

But for many people any small-medium dog that doesn't bark a lot or tear things up is good.

Try an older, rescue animal - a senior citizen dog from a shelter is especially nice because they're mellow, don't bark a lot and truly appreciate a good home. No, they won't live as long as a brand new puppy but older dogs are don't chew things or poop on the floor.
