Since it did not happen what makes you think there was a reaction?

I don't think they believed he was dead. There were so many issues with the whole crucifixion thing. But short and simple, people were left on the cross to rot. They were criminals. They weren't allowed to be taken down and given a proper burial.

At the time, Romans were notorious for taking bribes and Jesus had to die to fulfill the prophecy. It wouldn't be above the Romans to stage a death. I think when the Roman soldier offered Jesus water (which turned out to be vinegar) it was really something that put him to sleep and made it look like he had died. Shortly after that, he was taken down and put in the tomb before he came to.

I came to this conclusion because Jesus is reported in Jewish history as dying in a war years after his crucifixion.

My Lord's resurrection eventually changed a pagan Roman civilization to one based on Christ's teaching. Yes, the Popes messed it up, but it was a conversion nevertheless.

Oh, did you mean their initial reaction? It went something like this: Uh-oh.

Not many believed it. At the time, it was widely circulated that Jesus was actually the son of a Roman centurion. The source of this statement is Keltsos, a Greek philosopher who lived during Christs lifetime.

The disciples of Christ did not go off to Athens or Rome to preach that Christ was raised from the dead. Rather, they went right back to the city of Jerusalem.

The Roman guards fled. They left their place of responsibility. How can their attrition he explained, when Roman military discipline was so exceptional? Justin, in Digest #49, mentions all the offenses that required the death penalty. The fear of their superiors' wrath and the possibility of death meant that they paid close attention to the minutest details of their jobs. One way a guard was put to death was by being stripped of his clothes and then burned alive in a fire started with his garments. If it was not apparent which soldier had failed in his duty, then lots were drawn to see which one wand be punished with death for the guard unit's failure.

Jesus DID NOT resurrect...
that's BS from religion...

Here's the Solution to eliminate religion from YourLife:

Create a Private, Personal, Direct, Divine Relationship with Our Creator and save your Soul from religion's and atheist's beliefs.

Love and Believe in Our Creator;
Love and Believe in Yourself.

Only with Our Creator's Love and Peace will we be Truly Free!

Without God, there is No Love; Without religion, there are No Wars!

"religion is Spiritual fraud"; "religion is the Worse invention of humanity" - Jesus Christ, Buddha and any one else with Spiritual intelligence.

atheists = all the people in religion = all the ignorant fundamentalists = all the cults/superstitions

Edit - Sorry, thought you said Crucifixion. My bad - don't think the Romans had a reaction to that either.

It is curiously absent from the ancient texts. They record it but do not publish any reaction to it. Josephus records it, the letters to trajan, and one other military officer whose name I cannot recall at the moment.

It was the same reaction you will get from asking this question. Many did not believe it and thought it was a hoax by His followers. A few believed.

The Romans that recognized it as such put their faith and trust in Him. And for the next 300 years, Christians were hounded, persecuted, tortured and killed for their belief.
