Jonah was running from his calling, which was to go preach to the people of Ninevah. It was a way of stopping Jonah in his tracks and making him see he couldnt run from the Lord. The bible tells us it was a hard lesson learned because in the end, he still had more concern for that plant that gave him shade in the desert, than for all the people saved from destruction in Ninevah due to his preaching.

The Biblical account of Jonah is an amusing story about a very stubborn man who finally did what God told him to do. He got thrown overboard and he was in a big fish, not a whale. In the language it was written in, it was a play on words. In a big fish means worried. They still use that expression.
The Bible is a compilation of things that were written over a period of centuries by many different authors, who had no idea they were writing the Bible. In the Old Testament, almost every story, fact or fiction, has a moral--Obey God.

This generation looks for a sign. No sign shall be given it, except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of a fish three days and three nights, so shall the son of man be in the belly of the earth, three days and three nights.
God allowed Jonah to be consumed in that whale, so that he might be a sign to this generation!!!!

Jonah was disobeying God and going in the wrong direction. Unless he got turned around (but in his thinking and his direction) a city of people would have perished. So God allowed the large fish (note that in the book of Jonah it is never called a whale) to swallow Jonah, carry him back in the right direction, and spit him out on the shore of the city.
Results was that it changed his heart and saved the city.

Jonah chose to jump ship when he realized that he caused all of that commotion by disobeying God. God allowed Jonah to be consumed by the big fish so that he could reflect on his actions. When the fish spit him out, Jonah made the right choice. He was still able to get to the Ninevites to minister to them.

The big fish?
(which we assume is a whale)
because jonah disobeyed God- and jonah in the belly of that fish knew what he was suppose to do, and god led that fish back to where jonah was suppose to be- he spit him out on the beach -so he could go to ninevah and tell those people about God and how they needed to stop their wickedness.
it was a lesson jonah had to learn and it definately made him bold and faithful....that after that he desired to just go and tell others about God! God's hand was at work, and that is what is so awesome!

The Bible called it a big fish. We only assume it was a whale.
That was the only way the people of Nineveh would believe he was a true prophet. Jonah was to go to Nineveh (spelling) and their beliefs was that a prophet would come from the mouth of a fish.
God knew Jonah would run, God knew how to get Jonah there. It was all part of God's plan.

It's a fictional tale. Nobody can get eaten, live in it and then get spat out and still be alive and in one piece. Maybe if you had an oxygen tank and it was in a HUGE whale and you just stayed in its mouth for like a couple seconds you could live.
But seriously... it's fake. Only kids could believe that stuff.
