How about getting an alarm system and getting a pet to love as a family member? It really doesn't matter what type of dog you get if you are a good owner and loyal to your dog they will be loyal back and alert you to danger. If you really need that kind of protection maybe you should consider a lifestyle change and surround yourself with better people?

Most any dog can be a guard dog, but for protection I'd probably say Akita. I AM NOT AN AKITA HATER! I love the breed. I'm just answering the question!

Depends on whether you mean a dog to alert for intruders (any dog that barks can do that) or a fully trained protection dog. If a protection dog, I'd pick schutzhund trained doberman, German shepherd or rottweiler. Any dog used for protection should have an extremely stable personality and extensive training. Just having a dog that you've put out in a yard without proper socialization is just asking for trouble.

Akitas very seldomly bark, and will usually let someone into a yard....but under a watchful eye.
Rotties will usually bark well before anyone gets to your fence...and most people automatically think twice about entering a yard with a rottie even if it's really a big sweet push over.

rottweiler - I know more of that breed that I'd trust around a kid (and I'd expect friends and family to visit) - and they're scarier looking to people who don't know specifics about the breeds. I haven't "met" an akita yet that I entirely trust when its owner isn't around, though I do know a couple which are generally well-behaved.
training makes or breaks any dog, though, so a well-socialized and well-trained dog of either breed is a perfectly reasonable choice.

An Akita. Many Rottweilers have mental and physical health issues due to over breeding, and I wouldn't trust many of their breeders. Certain ones are over aggressive. And also, I just personally love Akitas. They're gorgeous and exotic and I like their personalities - they're so stoic and graceful.

I would have neither -
A guard dog requires special training and constant re-training
A guard dog will result in your home owner's insurance skyrocketing through the roof - if you could get insurance at all (liability issues)
You're much better of buying the expensive home alarm that calls the police and emts etc. That way your insurance costs will probably go down!
But don't get a guard dog of any kind.

A rott because they are nice, and pretty easy to train average I'd say... Here's a website and it tells you everything you need to know about pretty much every breed of dog or even cats. It tells you every thing by a rating of stars out of five and more. It tells you abotu different ratings on:
energy level,
exercise requirements,
playfulness,
affection level,
freindliness towards other dogs,
freindliness towards other pets,
freindliness towards strangers,
ease of training,
watchdog ability,
protection ability,
grooming,
cold tolerence,
and heat tolerence...
If your serious about getting a dog, this is a must see website!

I adore Rottweilers, and they do not require the amount of grooming, that an Akita would (due to their thick coats, they need daily brushing).
Rottweilers aren't exactly ''guard dogs''. Granted, they'll protect their family, but overall, they're extremely friendly & social dogs.

i'd rather have an Akita because i think they are gorgeous, but i heard that they are very mean--i don't know--really, i would choose a doberman over a rott, anyway.
