I am currently reading a novel called Bone Mountain by Elliot Pattison which is concerned with Tibetan Buddhism. A close friend of mine was a Buddhist and I studied it in college but I find I don't really have a clear understanding of the tradition. I began as a New Ager so I know there are a lot of texts out there which are not necessarily accurate. Any assistance is appreciated.

www.buddhanet.net is a great online start. Then you can branch out your research as you please.

My favorite authors are: Pema Chodron, Venerable Thubten Chodron, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, B. Alan Wallace and my favorite not-outright-Dharma book "The Quantum and the Lotus" by Trinh Xuan Thuan and Matthieu Ricard

yes the site vinslave suggested is good...be really careful about the sites you go to because i've come across some sites which have GROSS untruths about Buddhism.....

so unless it's a reputed website,don't go.....from buddhanet.net you can find other sources :)

also, mahayana Buddhism is a later sect...the true teachings of Buddha are contained in "Theravadha Buddhism".that's the purest form.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theravada

i think Nutsters has got a bit mixed up...yes,as far as the rats and things go...we try to avoid killing as much as possible...the thing is,when you have been brought up to the "non killing" concept from birth,it's not hard.i would never be able to kill an ant even if i WANTED to.....it's not simply the rules that are holding me back ,it's the fact that i've been brought up to those ethics..i just couldn't bring myself to take away even the life of an ant because i start thinking about how i would feel if someone washed ME down the sink!

but in the case of paedophiles, murderers etc..it DOESN'T mean that they should go UNpunished! what we must NOT do is "take the law into our hands" and be violent to them.because that's just going to create MORE violence in society and isn't going to benefit anyone.they must be dealt with by the law of the country.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buddhism by Gary Gach. Also buddhanet as vinslave has already recommended. Do a little reading and you'll find you've already been given some inaccurate information in these posts!

Well, Tibetan Buddhism, like Mahayana and Hinayana, is completely detached from the original principles of Buddhism.

I'd recommend this website: http://www.attan.com

and the book, 'The Doctrine Of Awakening' by Julius Evola

Buddhism seems a lovely, harmless & wonderful choice for a religion or way-of-life.
but
i couldn't commit to it.
i don't think fleas, lice, mites, black rats, all human parasites, killer bees, murderers, paedophiles & the like, deserve to live.
so i found it a religion with more holes than my fishnets!
it doesn't allow for any form of Justice or protection for anyone.
just a Live & let Live policy that doesn't make any sense.
but if you think you can tolerate it letting the scum of society, live
you go for it
