Obviously it really depends on the each individual child. If he/she is climbing out or in the crib by themself each time they climb in or out is a risk to the child to get hurt. If they are staying in fine and you don't need the crib for another child let them be. However if the child is to tall for the crib and they are almost out of room them I would move them.

We moved our son from his crib to a twin bed at 16 months. We primarily did this because his brother was on the way. We skipped the toddler bed and I am glad we did. We now spend time with him laying at night with him reading books or just talking and bonding. We set up the bed so he could get in and out at his leisure, but there was a rail which went half way down. I only know if 2 times he has fallen out of bed. We followed the same bed time routine, used picture books to help him transition. We started with naps and then when he was comfortable he went in his bed for bedtime. He also got his own blanket which he never had in the crib. His stuffed animals went with him along with his comfort toys. We never pushed the issue and just kind of let him lead the way. We let him play on the bed also before he had to sleep on it, that I am not sure was the best, because he wanted to play instead of sleep at night. He has never resented being removed from the crib and it is still in his bedroom and he understands it is his brothers. Typically 2 years is a good age or when they start climbing out of the crib. We plan to have my second son in a regular bed around 18 months.

either when they start crawling out of the crib or whenever you feel is the right time to switch. My daughters were both around two when i switched them to toddler beds and they thought it was so cool to have a big girl bed.

My daughter will be two in June and she has been sleeping in a toddler bed since Christmas 06. She took to it right away and loves it. She did fall out of it at first, but that has gotten better.

when they climb out! lol I think toddler beds are a waste...I went to a normal twin bed...let me think...she was 18 months old when we moved her to the twin bed (with 2 side rails), at 21 months I removed 1 rail, and at 24 months I removed both rails.
