Has anything changed lately? Is he new to your family? Do you by chance have a new baby? A lot of time dogs to this because they are jealous, mad, upset, etc... I just got a new dog. I am struggling with this with him. I adopted him. I have had him about a month now. He is slowly getting better. I don't think punishment works. Dogs don't respond well to negative treatment. I keep my on a set schedule to go outside. It slowly is doing the trick. I of course give a lot of praise as well. You could always crate him as well until he gets the point.

Get a book that describes CRATE TRAINING. It seems cruel to some to put a dog in a crate but if you do it RIGHT they will feel safe and secure in the crate and will NOT use the potty there-it is their cave or den. It is their own bed and private place so they don't use that as a bathroom (after they are weaned anyway). Since you already have a good dog with BAD habits, you will have to be very consistent and alert.
Also, always feed at the same time, once a day for most adults, and take a long walk after. The previous days meal will be ready to exit!
If pee-ing is a problem, it is OK to remove the water dish at night and return it in the a.m. Just don't forget!

Punishment is only going to make things worse. I know poop on the floor isn't good but unless you actually catch him in the act of pooping or peeing - it does no good. All it teaches him is that you're a bully - which you're not - you're just frustrated.

Feed him half an hour before you take him outside. this will stimulate his innards to make him want to "go."

Take him outside for a nice, long romp in a peaceful environment. This means an hour at least of outside time.

When he does "go" give him lots of praise at what a good boy he is! Make a real fuss over his "deed" each and every time he "goes" outside properly.

Gradually teach him to use one corner of the yard as his bathroom. That will save you from having to hunt for "treasures."

Also, pay attention to his body movements. If he acts like he's looking for a place to "go" inside, immediately take him outside to his bathroom spot.

make sure he's getting lots of water to drink

OR you coul train him to use a pad or kitty box as a place to "go" inside.

Punishment will only make him want to go in places you don't see immediately as well as make him fearful.
Try watching him very closely and take him out on a leash at the first sign of needing to go. When he does go outside praise the heck out of him and immediately give him a treat. This will make him want to go when outside as he knows he will get POSITIVE vibes from you when he does.

Dogs don't s*** where they eat, thats why when dogs are being housebroken they're confined to a cage or something to that effect. Maybe you should keep your dog in a cage for awhile, just until he gets the picture.

Does he get walks? Sometimes, you have to ''stimulate'' the dog, before the desire to defecate occurs. Take your dog for long walks. I assure you, he'll probably do his business soon enough.

Punishment is NOT the correct approach. Praise him when he does his business outside, and ignore him when he does it indoors. Put the feces in the backyard, where it belongs, and eventually, he'll catch on. You just have to be patient.
