The girl that I am dating has sleeping habits that make me nervous. She often breathes very short breaths during the course of the night. In addition, she has a sudden convulsion periodically during the course of the night. Often we are out drinking when I notice these symptoms. I just did some research on sleep apnea, and I don't think that she has this.

You might have her make an appointment with a sleep lab. I was given a sleep test, and had to stay overnight. They hooked me up to a monitor and watched me also all night long. After 4 hours they found I'd stopped breathing about 140 times for at least 15 seconds or more. Is she tired during the day? Does she snore loudly? These are a few symptoms. She may not have all the symptoms they list for sleep apnea, but still suffer from it.

If she finds out she does have it, I can tell you from experience that a CPAP machine makes a world of difference. It's a machine with a tube leading to a mask you wear at night (my husband calls me the elephant woman). It forces a steady stream of air into your lungs constantly, but not a lot, just enough to keep your air passages open. This keeps you breathing, and I know that the first night I spent on it, it was like a revelation--I never had a better night's sleep in my life!

1st . alcohol has several symptoms one being shallow breathing, and supressed breathing.
2nd doesnt sound like sleep apnea, she would be pausing or snoring very loudly in her sleep.
-personally i think she has a deep state of sleep and goes into a "dream state" especially if shes been drinking. as long as shes breathing..thats good. if shes convulsing..she could be dreaming of a childhood traume she may has not told you about, or conscously doesnt remember from a childhood.
