scenerio. jack is a friend of jills. jack's a bartender. jill goes there often. jill tips with each beer served vs. one tip when done. jill and another friend had 4 beers wiping out 20 between beer/tip. jills friend had one more. jill paid with another 20 then left to go to another bar. they get there jill realizes she left her 16.75 change on jacks bar. jill called jack right away asking him to leave it behind the bar for when she comes back. told him to keep all but 10 (he has been tipped already) jack says no deal. it was left there it is his. jill thought he was joking but when she went back a few days later on his next shift she asked for her money. he got angry and they argued over who's money it is. she had some valid points. if she left her purse cell.glasses cigs or anything else would he still think its his. since they are friends she can expect him hold it. OR like he says if someone leaves $ he is right to assume it is a tip. tho he's already been tipped. who is right?

also jack has stolen from jill and others at a superbowl party by taking the raffle tickets left by her full beer glass when she went out to smoke. he took hers AND everyone elses. jill knew her raffle # and when mentioned it to jack including the # he said "sorry about your luck" so when that # was called jack took the prize and kept it. i think he is a thief but others disagree. what do you think?

this question is not about judging jills drinking and smoking habits. remember there was 4 between the two and one more for the friend. since jill was driving she didn't have another.

It sounds like Jack is a jerky money-grubber and I think Jill should start frequenting a different bar.
A friend would not even had needed Jill to ask for the money - he would've given it back readily.

Jill is right. Jack, first of all is a known thief, and that's pretty bad. Jill was still willing to tip him and he got greedy. If Jack were smart, he would have done as Jill asked because she leaves him tips all the time and he will lose a good customer.
Jill needs to realize Jack is NOT her friend. He makes money off of her and that's why he's been nice to her---just earning his tips. If I were Jill, I would find another bar or, if the place has 2 bartenders, start using the other one. Her other choice is to stop tipping him altogether to teach him a lesson.

I think Jill is right. Regardless if he thought it was another tip or not, Jill told him it was left by mistake. If they're really friends, he would give the money back since he knows now it was a mistake. For him to keep it just says he cares more about money than his friendship with Jill.

surely jack isn't crazy enough to think that jill bought a beer for $4 and left him a $16 tip?
jack should give the money back - all of it.
jack is no friend of jill's is this is the crap he pulls.

Here is a simple resolution.
Have Jill go there, order drinks, and not tip until it totals $16.75. Then start tipping.
Jack should have given the money back to her. Its not like she does not tip! Giving the money back would be a good thing to do and help him get more tips and be in a favorable light.

Oh my, any bartender that assumes every dime on the bar is their tip is really out of touch. A $16.75 tip? No way. That's not cool. A real friend would not do that. That guy is NOT her friend and he is greedy to boot.
Your girlfriend has every right to be upset. Tipping is an option, keeping your customers change is theft.
I would encourage your girlfriend to run tabs. Tell the bartender you want to run a tab, and pay it at the end of the evening. Tip on that final amount, not after every cocktail or beer. I never ever tip after every drink and always run a tab.
Since she's a regular, she should run a tab and pay when she's done. She should also tell the owner of the bar where her jerk "friend" tends bar about his keeping her change. That's not good. I managed a pub/grill and would have fired anyone for that. Not cool at all.
He should have given her the $16.75 back without any questions asked. He's a jerk and he is wrong.

I wouldn't go back to that bar and I wouldn't be friends with someone who steals from me. She unfortunately doesn't have much to stand on. He can rightly assume that it was a tip if she left the bar and did not ask for her change before she did. Once she left though, it was a done deal. An ethical person would have given her the money back, but Jack doesn't sound like that kind of guy. In this situation he should give it back, but she should watch her things better, he has already proved himself to be untrustworthy.

Based upon the phone conversation and the fact that Jill already had tipped him, I'll call the foul on Jack.

Sounds like Jack isn't a friend at all, and Jill needs to find a new bar...

Jill is right. The money was probably put in a pile next to her drink while the tips she was leaving were probably pushed towards the bartender. If the bartender didn't mistake them for a tip while she was sitting there, he should have know that leaving it was a mistake made by a well tipping customer not to mention a friend. When I bartended, if a customer did that (not to mention a friend) we always grabbed an envelope put the money in it with customer's name or drink and threw it in the safe until the customer returned for it.
