I am assuming this is your first? Congratulations!
I can not give you specific statistics but as a Mother to 6 and #7 on the way i can give you an idea of how to avoid the tearing...Make sure your Dr. is open to a Birth Plan, do not use stirrups and stay away from the epidural if at all possible. I have torn twice , my first child and my 3rd after the Dr. laid me flat on my back and put my knees behind my ears! Now, I insist on warm compresses during early pushing and nearly sitting uprith as you do when you move your bowels. My OB is great and the last 3 I have had not a single tear, good luck!

This was the one thing that scared me the most, too. Probably because I had surgery "down there" several years ago and it hurt so bad, and took a year of physical therapy to recover from it.
So, I asked my doctor and midwife about it every time I had an appointment leading up to the birth. Just tell them your concerns, and they can work with you.
Turns out tearing was the least of my concerns. My midwife did a great job of doing perineal massage during the birth and eased the baby out without much tearing. I only had to have one tiny stitch.
I had other complications, but I won't bore you with those.
If you're worried about tearing, you can do perineal massage, and also just talk to your doctor or midwife, and express to them that you wish to have them ease the baby out (the midwifes are better at this) without an episiotomy.
(I'm assuming you don't want an episiotomy either.)
Good luck!

I dont think that everyone does tear. BUT probably 90% of women do... I did... But it was only a little they just stiched me back up and I didnt even feel it because I was so happy.. The thing that hurt me worst was when my placenta broke into a million pieces and and my dr.. had her arm shoved up to my heart trying to get it all out....

I have 5 children, no tearing, i do not know about the stats but none for me, i think it depends on the doc and nurses, and how careful and how much of a hurry they might be in, i was blessed with great docs and nurses
