We are thinking of buying a new camcorder and have been so bamboozled with technical details that we do not know which sort to buy!

We are assuming that the HDD is probably the best but cannot really afford that much so we were wondering what everybody else would reccomend

the consensus is, miniDV is the best quality and value.

Hi8 and Digital 8 are dead end formats.

DVD has some interest but a lot of issues should you ever want to do anything with the video beyond playback.

the HDD is a flexible format, so you have more options. but it is pricey, especially considering you will eventually fill the drive and need to download to something else for permanent storage.

at the present time dv mini is the best the storage on HDD is vast on memory usage, at the moment Blue Ray DVD recorders are about £500 so with out that you will still have to record on SD ( the normal dv mini output. The Panasonic NV gs300 is a very good model . This works on 3 chips that converts the light coming into the which hits three sensors. The colour is realistic and the sharpness superb. you will not see much difference in definition. The eyes can only see a fraction of what is actually there.Join a local camcorder club. who will enjoy giving you good advice. HDD is newest and most expensive, but not best (imho, of course). I'd go for MiniDV on the grounds that it's still the best quality, easiest to edit and best bang for the buck. On the downside, you'll need to install a firewire card (but it's still a lot cheaper than the other options), you have to transfer the video in real time and it takes up a lot of disk space.

Canon and Sony are both good brands.
