If you dont clean them right away be sure to keep them on ice until you do . The organs in a fish start decomposing quick especially on a hot day.
Some fish can be kept on a stringer and will stay alive till you get home , You can wait on them, but if they die on a stringer they need to be taken off and put in a cooler with ice .
I do prefer to clean all game and fish soon as I have a chance .

Most fish you can put on ice and wait to clean. I caught a shark once & the person I was fishing with said it needed to be cleaned right away, there is something in the skin of sharks, at least that is what I was told. Thats why I stick with freshwater fishing.

Yes gut and gill any shark caught as soon as possible and ice them down! They will start to absorb fluids from the body and this is what gives them a bad flavor!
You will find that if you clean a fish soon and ice down the flavor will be at its best!
I am saying just to clean out innards not skin or head the fish as some states you must have skin on certain types so the local DNR ppl can identify the fish plus leave head on for length for species that have size limits!

It's best to clean right away, especially with oily fish like mackerel, bluefish, sardines, but it could wait for several hours before you clean the fish. Best is to keep them in a covered bucket, a cooler chest, or on ice, in other words, out of the sun. Most shark taste horrible, there are exceptions of course, Mako is delicious and so is Thresher shark.

Depends on the species Bluefish you need to clean right away and bury it under ice til you get home and cook it
DO NOT Refridgerate bluefish it gets oily and nasty
Like I said depends on species most freshwater you can hold off til you get back home but I always clean them at the lake and through the guts back in the water.

It varies from what I am told. Growing up we always packed it in ice until we got home. Put it in a plastic or styrafoam cooler with lots of ice. Then we would run it under cold water and my parents would clean them. They didn't smell as fishy this way either..which was nice...not a fan of fishy smell. SO the goal is to keep it cold if you are not cleaning it right away.

Why not clean them on the lake? I have developed some spots where the eagles know I'm doing at my chopping block on a little rock island.
Not to mention that you don't have any fish guts stinking up your garbage!

If you wait till you get home, you should put ice on them. Pack them in as much ice as possible. If its going to be a long trip home, you should gut the fish due to the fact that the organs decompose quickly. As long as they are on ice they should be fine until you get home.

It is perfectly fine to wait until you get home. We have been fishing for YEARS and we've done it BOTH ways and it doesn't make a difference as long as you keep the fish cold! =)

some one has told you a fish story fish kept in water or a live weel will hold until you get home to clean them
