They are there to prescribe medication. Millions of people are on drugs, so it's no big deal

I am a therapist so this is my field and I expect to see people in my office for this. Having said that, when you make your appointment you can ask to speak to a nurse and you can kinda get a feel of what kind of office this is. Most MDs I know recognize that depression should be treated with meds and talk therapy. So don't worry about that. You also don't need a reason to be depressed. It could be genetic. Or situational... That is... You might need some help now but it will get better in a few months. You are just asking for help now.

There is a diagnosis that deals with depression due to a medical condition. It sounds like these body aches are very painful. Have you been diagnosed? I know Fibromyalgia and depression have been linked. Its hard to find someone that has one and not the other.

Just be honest about your situation and dont be afraid that they are going to judge you. Worse case......... If you don't feel that this person listened to you or took enough time with you... go to another MD.......

Also, if you already know that you are depressed and are looking for help.... There is nothing stopping you from getting a refferal or calling your local mental health. All they do there is treat mental health illnesses.

Good luck.... Hey, I do this for a living and I was diagnosed with situational depression after my mother died. I was depressed for about a year. I got help and it has made all the difference.

I am a nurse of thirty years, and have dealt with my own clinical depression of much of that time. It's NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF. But I would suggest you see a psychiatrist rather than your family doctor, simply because, especially for a first time diagnosis, the psychiatrist simply knows more about it, understands it better and can better prescribe any medication you may need. Your family doc can do the follow up and refill the meds, but see a psychiatrist first. And if you have ongoing difficulty, go back to the psychiatrist. There really is a huge difference in knowledge base and experience, and a psychiatrist is just a medical doctor who has specialized in mental health issues.

Im not a dr but i have a pretty good answer to your question. I think that you need to go to an endocrinologist and have blood work done. They will be able to check to see if anything in your body is chemically imbalanced. For instance. Your thyroid for one...will make you very depressed and achy and grouchy if it is out of wack. I had that problem and now take synthroid for it and i am much less grouchy, depressed, and tired. Some people think that depression is just depression and take pills that might just cover the real problem. So my suggestion is to go get your blood work tested first. Tell the endocrinologist how you feel and then if theres nothing wrong go to a doctor for depression. Also, there is a book/movie called the secret. I want you to get it and watch it. It really helped me out. Good Luck

I'm not a doctor or a nurse - but I did go to my doctor about my depression, and he was lovely.

Depression is horrible; there's no need for you to suffer in this way because the help is available, you just need to ask for it.

Doctors see many, many people who have depression - it's a recognised problem experienced by millions of people.

So do go and speak to your doctor, and be very honest with him/her about how bad you are feeling.

And if for any reason your doctor is not helpful - find a different doctor!

Doctors are there to help; that's their job. Maybe a friend or family member could go with you for some moral support?

You're clearly feeling really low and unhappy and it's a great shame; do go and seek help.

Good luck with it.

Most doctors and nurses are very sympathetic to your depression symptoms. My experience is that rarely, but occasionally, they are slightly put off by mental health concerns, as they are more familiar with symptoms that can be tested and observed (like diseases that are visible or show up in your bloodwork). It depends completely on the doctor. This is not to say that they won't believe you, only that they sometimes are not as experienced with treating mental health symptoms.

If you want someone who is more experienced with mental health issues, you could try seeing a psychiatrist. Many psychiatrists offer medication management as well as counseling, while some only do medication.

I have been a nurse for 6 years and I work in Neurology. I see many, many, many pt's everyday with depression,.anxiety,bi-polar etc. Is is an illness not anything to be embarrassed about. Tell your doctor and he/she can help you. It can ever be reversed. You should not go thru this alone. your doc will not think any different of you. We are all humane and sometimes we need a little help. That's what we are here for.
