yes they do hear better. I just have to look at my cat to know the mailman is walking the front path... and sure enough, a few seconds later a loud slap! tells me the mail has been delivered...which my cat knew first... :)

Yes, for example my kitten has this toy that rattles, but it's really soft and I can barely her eat. Other day my boyfriend had his music up really loud and I just had her toy move it to where I keep all her toys. She heard in rattle over all the music and cam running from the other side of the house.

Yes, they hear 10 times louder than we do. That's why they get frightened by loud noises. They can also distiguish their owners car coming home from either 100 feet or yards.

Absolutely ... sometimes, their life depends on it. Almost every animal (wild or domestic) possess a much more heightened sense of hearing, than humans do. :)
