18 mo is too early to dx hyperactivity, but keep an eye on it. If it bothers you when people comment on it say " we are just so happy she is a healthy, normal child" and shut 'em up!

I wish you would have given a bit more info like age of the child, why do you think the child is hyperactive and the like, but I'll give it shot. Is the hyper-activeness associated ADHD (H for hyperactive) or is the child a real go getter? It's a given that children have more energy than we do. A good daily run in the part or your own back yard to get rid of some of that energy. You can teach the child some organizational skills. Hang jacket up in the same place every day, along with shoes and other clothing. If cloths need washing they go in the hamper or a place that's just for his/her dirty clothes. He/she can help put clean clothes away in there proper places. If school age, book bag should be put in the same place every day or given to the parent/guardian so it's not forgotten, so it can be checked for assignments Don't ask him/her to do too much. You can always add to the list as the child gets older. What ever the morning schedule is keep to it. Bath/showers at the same time. After breakfast he/she can put bowl on the counter or in the sink if the child can handle that. By that I mean if the child it tall enough to do so. Toddlers can do their share around the house too, as long as they are safe enough to do or with a little help. Small children in Day Care are expected to clean up after themselves. Some times they need a little nug, but they learn Reading to a child islways a calming thing even if they want to turn the pages before it's time to. He/she can learn a few words in the prosses. Puzzles are another way for a little thinking to keep a child's mind busy instead of his/her body busy zipping around like a tornato. A walk around the block is also a good stimulent. By the time you get home he/she is ready for a snack and may surprise you, and sit at the table for more than five seconds or even be willing to take a short nap. Like I said above I don't know the age group so I went with pre school age. Could also apply to older children too. By teach them to put things back in the same place they won't have to be running to you saying I can't find it. Who knows, he/she may be an olympic runner some day like I'm an olympic writer.

Do you think she is hyper - compared to other kids her age? Is she bouncing off the walls and screaming all the time? Is it hard for her to rest?

Kids are very active by nature. Some more than others. But there is a line between normal and problem. My children would stand on the couch and scream constantly. They were constantly running all around and couldn't calm down...couldn't take naps...couldn't sleep right. Turns out my kids both have food allergies to dairy, soy, and glutens. In particular, dairy makes them "hyper". After I figured this out and stopped feeding them those foods they calmed down tremendously and turned out to be very lovey, snuggly babies. But at first I thought they were just hyper by nature.

So...there is no real answer to your question. Just know there could be an underlying medical reason for your child being "hyper"...or it could just be a normal hyper child.

On a side note: the first thing I would do is eliminate sugary sweets and drinks from her diet to see if that is just one reason. See if she calms down. If you want, from there you can eliminate dairy (substitute with Vit D and Calcium fortified Rice Milk) for about a week and see if that helps. Elimination diets are the best way to determine food intolerances.

My boyfriend's son is ADHD (I'm definately not suggesting that your child is). I did some research on how to control hyperactivity in ADHD kids, and I found something that may be helpful to you.
Hyperactivity is OK! Especially if she's 18 months. If she is hyperactive, she has extra energy. That energy has to go somewhere! Don't try to "make" her less hyperactive, just try to redirect where the energy goes. If she's doing something dangerous, suggest something more safe where she can still use that extra energy.

ALL 18 month old children are hyperactive, don't do anything, she is a toddler, you want to label her already, children are hyper, tell people thank you for being concerned but she is fine, she is discovering everything for the first time, it's exciting,

Talk to her pediatrician. She could be, but in today's society, alot of people are quick to try and push meds. My son is 3 and is very inquisitive and active - he always needs to be doing something - my sister and my friends try to say he's hyperactive. He's not, he's just a curious little boy who likes to be doing things. Some people just don't know what to do with kids now a days, except plopping them in front of the TV and turning them into lazy couch potatoes.

It's much too early to worry about it. Just keep her busy and give her lots of opportunities for physical activity.

There is nothing wrong with her,and don't let anybody tell you that. There would be a problem if she wasn't doing anything, just sitting there. let that baby have the time of her life, and have fun,it's ok.
