Thanks all...It seems cash wins! I just had a hard time imagining someone handing over 5,000 in cash...makes me so nervous I have to pee...

Cashiers checks can be easily faked.

I would have them write me a personal check, and then go to their bank with them, and have it cashed. For a small fee, you can have that money wired to your bank account. That way you're not walking around with $5,000 in cash.

Or conversely, go down to their bank, and ask them to wire the cash into your account, and take the receipt of wire transfer.

I have had bank checks Travelers checks and money orders show up as either counterfit or invalid.

I would accept cash or Cash! If they want the car they will find the cash.

Like others have said, you're pretty much screwed. That's the risk of co-signing a loan, if the other defaults, you're on the hook for it. Well your first warning sign should've been that at his age (guessing early 30s) he shouldn't have a problem getting a loan on his own, unless he's defaulted before and ruined his credit. I guess you can sue him in small claims.... but if he can't pay the creditor, he probably can't pay you either. And even if you win, judgements are capped at $5000 in most states.

i would ask for strait out cash ,checks can easily be stolen or they can cancel a check on you ,if something happens to the vehicle ,i always get cash on a sale ,this way you don't have to wonder about it,that's the best method of payment for anything, good luck hope his helps.
