It isn't your dog that needs to be trained--it is your houseguests!!
Tell everyone who comes over to your house to ignore your dog. If your friends walk through your front door and immediately ooh and ahh in a high pitched voice and pet your dog, he will be encouraged to jump all over them.
Best if your friends act calm and act like they are coming over to see YOU. The the dog will approach your friends on his own terms and once he sees that they aren't all that interesting, will go on with his business.

teach him the same way that you did in class.
This is what I did
I had a neighbor come over knock on the door, I let him in.
Before I answered the door, I made my dog sit & said NO.
Once the neighbor came in I once again made the dog sit & said NO. (in a firm voice)
I asked the neighbor to repeatedly do this till the dog understood not to do it. Then I asked a friend to do the same thing so it got use to different people coming in the house.
I also learned the dog back, now when I say back it has to let others that enter my house that they have to have there own space that he must not jump up & only go to them if the guests had called the dog. It took me about a month of training but it now no longer jumps & my guests have peace when they come.

Hook a lease to his collar and let it drag behind him. When someone comes to the door, before you open the door, grab the end of the leash, make him sit next to you and step on the leash so he cannot lundge upward to jump.
If you don't have time to grab the leash, and he jumps on someone, tell him "OFF" very firmly and get the leash, make him sit and stand on the leash.
Hitting him is just creating a game, and he's just going to continue doing it. You need to be consistant with the "OFF" and the correction. Once the person has left, release him and praise him for sitting nicely. He's young, he'll catch on with persistance and consistancy.

DO NOT do as "jeanie" says and hit your dog. I have one rule about hitting. DO NOT hit anything if it is breathing.
Your friends can try this with your jumping dog:
When he starts to jump up they turn their backs on him so he cannot jump on them. They totally ignore him EXCEPT to say, "NO!"
They turn back toward him and when he jumps, they turn again and say "NO"! When they turn back toward the dog and he DOESN'T jump on them, they say, "GOOD DOG!" and give him a treat. Eventually the treat is not needed because the dog won't jump any more.
THIS WILL WORK. Do not try the knee in the chest or the hit on the head. Abuse doesn't work with people and it doesn't work with animals.

I block him with my knee when he jumps up on me, but most other folks won't do it so I also put him on a drag lead when people come over when we are home. If we're out, I don't let anyone play or pet him until he puts four on the floor.

I agree w/ Pam above, using the command "OFF" consistently was the way I trained my dogs and it worked pretty well.

My dog used to be the same way. I rolled up some newspaper and gave him a light spanking everytime he jumped on someone after a few weeks he got the point!
Good Luck!

I would raise my knee up and knee him in the chest, not enough to hurt but enough to get the point across.
