You are absolutely right. Anything that gets in the way of our relationship with God is an idol, whether statue, image, money, goods, family, or even ourselves. Because our humanity or flesh has a hard time accepting and practicing the high, but just, standards of God, we fall prey to worshipping idols that are not as demanding. Our flesh *thinks* its easier to conduct rituals and chants to a statue or image, than to follow the Ten Commandments. Our flesh *thinks* God's Law is too rigid. But it is rigid for a reason - to keep us out of sin and in His favor. We need to keep our humanity or flesh in check with our spirit, feeding our spirit with the Word of God, so that we may receive His promise of salvation, through Jesus Christ. Idols do not offer that promise. But in their darkness, idol worshippers think that they are receiving the same promise. They are living a lie concocted by the devil. The truth is God, His Holy Spirit, already lives in each one of us. We can have an intimate, direct, personal relationship and conversation with Him, anytime, anywhere.

It makes some people feel better when they can see and feel the "thing" they feel represents their god. They are obviously oblivious to John 4:24 which says God is a spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and truth.

Also, the very first commandment is very clear about idol worship. The true god was not created. He IS the creator. So, if it's man made, it's obviously false. But there are people who worship other spirit creatures that would also be considered false worship.

The wording of your question shows a probable pre-disposition towards believing that some idols are true and others are not.

The biggest reason a person worships anything at all, in the way they do, is because their parents, peers, and society instructs them to do so. Just like most everything else we do. Most people adopt the most dominant ethical or religious paradigm in their environment.

So what seems normal in one culture is perceived as exotic/strange/or wrong in another. If one examines the teachings of other religions, it often becomes clear why the adherents do what they do.

The same purpose of falling down and worshiping a god that isn't there. Most people need something to believe in, or a reason to say it's not my fault! Or if they do bad they could ask forgiveness from (Instead of being a person and asking forgiveness from the person you wronged!) Different people different reasons.

Worshiping idols is much more than falling down at the feet of a stone statue.

Idolatry is when anyone doesn't worship God.

False idols are everywhere...cars, homes, jobs, children...

Idolatry is not just about statuary, it is primarily related to "believing something will get me something." Our minds are filled with such nonsense. Even "If I am very good I'll go to heaven," can make someone behave in a ridiculous manner - depending on who defined "good" to the child. Our beliefs are very dangerous, giving them all up is the only way to begin to "know" anything for certain. False idols refers to being worshipful of anything.

For the same reason people worship a mythical god in the heavens, although, I have to say, there aren't many idols out there any more. They have been taught to believe in it
