This is true you do not need a passport to travel to Hawaii if you are a US Citizen or a permanent resident. Your drivers license and/or permanent resident card will serve as ID. This is something you would have to show at check in at the airport anyways.

If you are a foreign national, of course you would have to provide your countrys passport as well as your visa.

If you are in the US illegally, you of course run the risk of being questioned and if unable to provide sufficient documentation, you could be spending time with ICE. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

If you are a foreigner, once you've entered the United States at an official point of entry, like an airport or land border Customs entry point, you are free to travel within the United States without having to show a passport. I have flown to Hawaii and Alaska many times and they do not check id's when you arrive, just like any other state.

Currently a drives license is sufficient, but that will not always be the case. It looks like the government will be soon requiring everyone to have either a passport or special ID to travel by plane inside the USA.

You have no need to worry at the current time...

There are no restrictions on interstate travel and there will never be. No one checks you when you go state to state (even from alaska and haiwaii)
