I need to ..'cut in cold shortening with pastry blender...' says the recipe. I don't have a pastry blender, nor do I want to go spend money for one! What can I use instead?

2 forks or 2 knives. But a pastry blender is only like $3. It's a good investment. Don't use your hands, that warms the shortening and you won't get a flaky crust. You need everything to be as cold as you can.

A fork, a cord whisk, a pair of butter knives--i've got used all of them at one time or yet another! A fork works exceedingly a lot if the butter is comfortable and there is not a lot flour, knives are a discomfort (for me besides), a cord whisk is what i take advantage of maximum usually--even nonetheless I now very own a pastry blender--it purely works nicely and saves having greater dishes to sparkling up later.

My grandma always used 2 table knives, I've used a fork in the past. Now I mostly just use my clean hands.

You can also use a food processor. Pulse the flour and shortning together until they resemble coarse corn meal.
