Intussusception occurs when one portion of the bowel slides into the next, much like the pieces of a telescope. When this occurs, it creates an obstruction in the bowel, with the walls of the intestines pressing against one another. This, in turn, leads to swelling, inflammation, and decreased blood flow to the intestines involved.

An intussusception is a situation in which a part of the intestine has prolapsed into another section of intestine, similar to the way in which the parts of a collapsible telescope slide into one another. This will cause intestinal obstruction and sometimes intestinal ischemia. This requires urgent medical attention.
Intussusception may also mean the process whereby a new blood vessel is created by the splitting of an existing blood vessel in two. It is one of the three ways that blood vessels are known to be formed in the human body, the other two being angiogenesis and vasculogenesis.
