This is a religious question yet I am not religious before I get berated for the question. I was just wondering why Jesus didn't pull his hands and feet through the nails and go into hiding. If I was in that situation that's what I'd do.....In fact, why didn't all the crucified people do that?

I don't really understand the 'he dies so I live thing' but even if that's the case why didn't the other crucified people pull themselves off?

Why didn't crucified people remove themselves? they were not only half dead, they werre nine tenths dead before they even got to the cross. They'd probably been beaten, startved, beaten spat on, beaten etc for months. The Romans were not known for their humane treatment of prisoners. Then on the big day itself, the condemned had to carry their own cross to wherever it was they were to be killed whilst still being beaten. They would then be laid on the cross (not a fine piece of workmanship, they would have had huge splinters going into their backs) and have a massive nail, roughly made hammered through their wrists and ankles, shattering bones and veins.

Then they would be slowly lifted and their body weight would be put on their feet/ankles and as they got into an upright position, their airway would be blocked slightly meaning they would also suffocate slowly.

As a final measure, it was commonplace to break the legs of the condemned as they hung on their crosses. Since most crucifixion areas were outside city walls, you would have had animals and predatory birds stalking the area and trying to get an early snack. They would have known from experience that when the humans were brought down they would be dumped in a pit ready for them to eat so what was the harm in getting a nibble early?

Now we've established the non-so-fit condition of the condemned, we come to one in particular - Jesus. Although, all the above would have done to him. He was still fully God and had all the power that status afforded Him. Christians believe that although He could have easily come down from the cross, the reason He didn't was that it would take the 'death' of the Creator to smash the power of death and hell into the ground.

He didn't plan on staying dead all that long, three days would just about do it.

Christ died on the cross because if He had not then we would not be saved from the bounds of sin. It was prophecied thousands of years before His death that would happen. Most of the Jews did not understand the prophecy to be that God would come in the flesh and die for us. But it is what happened. Then Christ rose from the dead three days later and that is how we have His gift. We cannot work for this gift; only accept it and understand. Christ is love.

And to the poster who said he could not have been nailed up there; you're silly! Crucifixion was common practice from Christ's time and on into the Catholics. Yes, the Catholics practiced crucifixion in the early days! Anyone who called themselves a follower of Christ and not the pope were put to death (hanging, burning, crucifixion, stoning, etc). It's completely plausible and scientifically possible to crucify someone. You might want to talk to a scientist, rather than a sceptic without any sort of degree in science. ;)

After been whipped and tortured, the person who was hung on the cross with nails through their hands and feet would not have the strength to pull themselves off the cross, and imagine the pain, as the nails would have severed nerves and ripped muscles. Also when you are hanging from a cross you suffocate as your legs do not support your body so your arms are supporting you weight tightening the chest muscles so you cannot breath.
Also it was not God plan, as God wanted Jesus to save mankind.

Based on all the other answers regarding Jesus dying for us, let me give another reason because that sacrifice was just one part of this drama.

After the cross and the resurrection, the Apostle Paul said - "let me tell you a mystery".

Paul was referring to the fact that Jesus left us so, in Jesus' words - "I will send the comforter who will teach you all things even the mysteries of God".

Stay with me now.

Satan had no idea what was about to happen. Satan pushed the crowd - "crucify him! crucify him!" Had he known the mystery, he would have pushed the crowd to set Jesus free.

Here is the mystery - Jesus embodied the Holy Spirit. Only Jesus while He was walking the earth and teaching.

By dying on the cross He gave everyone the opportunity to have the Holy Spirit in them by becoming believers in what He did on the cross for mankind.

In the Book of Acts, the Holy Spirit became available to all believers. This multiplied the Holy Spirit on earth.

In effect, Jesus was recruiting an army of believers to counter the army of Satan on earth. This is how "Christians" began. Before the event in the Book of Acts there were no Christians. They were disciples.

Each Christian has the counsel of the Holy Spirit today. Billions in the army of Christ against Satan's plan to destroy mankind and take as many as he can to Hell before his time runs out. Christians are trying to get as many as possible into Heaven before time runs out.

On the cross, Jesus fired the first shot in the battle for the hearts and minds of the human race.

He did not make a regulation that required him to die to compensate for the sins of guy. the position are you getting your information? it became merely the in hassle-free words thanks to redeem humanity from eternal separation from him; no longer because He made a regulation. His 'vast drama queen' act wasn't a 'little educate finished of blood and tears' it His showing the quantity of his love for us. we are His human beings, His flock, His acquaintances, His advent. if being crucified isn't tremendous suffering... i ought to hate to work out what you imagine is. so vlad tortured his sufferers. that would not propose Jesus felt no discomfort. He turned right into one hundred% human and ought to have felt each and each and every of the discomfort everybody else ought to in the experience that they were crucified Jesus suffered a great deal per chance vlad's torturees suffered more effective. you won't be able to precisely positioned different's sufferings on a scale reckoning on the procedures they were tortured by.

As to the non-religious question of why everyone didn't just pull themselves off the crosses and run away... I'm pretty sure it's a lot harder to pull yourself off of something you've been nailed to than you're making it seem. Also, there's the armed roman legionnaires that are watching you the whole time.

It was not the nails that held Jesus Christ to the cross...it was divine LOVE! God is love and was manifested (displayed) to us by his Son, Jesus Christ coming into this world to die for a sinner like me!
See John 3:16, 1Timothy 3:16

for one, Jesus didn't get off the cross because of two things. 1-He didn't get off because of obedience. Jesus prayed before hand and asked if the whole cross thing could be avoided. then Jesus said if that's what God wanted, then it will be done, even though He knew of the pain He would have to endure. 2-the love for those on earth who wouldn't be able to go to heaven. the original plan was for humans to live forever, but due to the mistakes of Adam and Eve, God told them they would die. they thought He meant immediately, when He meant that they would just have an end to life. Believers get into heaven because of the sacrifice that Jesus made. Jesus is the bridge between the death on earth and the heavenly home with God.

If he was completely turn his back on humanity don't you think he would have gone into hiding BEFORE he was put on the cross?

It isn;t a he dies and I live.
Its more like humanity f*cked themselves with sin, and the only way to open the gate is by a divine soul who can walk through the depts of hell,

and no human is divine,
only Jesus was.

Its not as easy as it sounds; the nails, or spikes, they used had broad heads on them, preventing one from just slipping their hands or feet off. The sheer muscular strength it would take to do so would require the physique of a body builder.
Besides, with one inch wide holes in your feet, it would be nealy impossible to walk afterwards, even if you did.
