Many who questioned the authority of the Church before the 1500's were just killed and that was the end of it. Henry VIII was no specifically a reformer, though he certainly was responsible for the changes toward Protestantism in England, where he had previously earned the title Defender of the Faith from the Pope for his treatise against the "German heresies."
Martin Luther was probably the first reformation advocate to be acknowledged (and allowed to live, though under threat), but the reasons for this were more about politics than religion, and he died as he lived - a Roman Catholic (though excommunicated). His dearest wish was to be reconciled with the Church, and I often wonder what he would think of "his" denomination?

Which time?
There have been many saints raised up over the centuries to reform the church.
St. Teresa of Avila and St. Francis of Assisi both come to mind.
Or did you mean the "counter reformation?"

i'm a recent (interior the previous 2-years) convert from "common Christian" to Catholic. i've got continuously style of cringed as quickly as I heard Catholics stated as only yet another branch of Christianity. It only did no longer look appropriate. Tonite, observing a television application approximately converts (EWTN: the form abode), I heard the host make a telling remark: "changing to Catholicism is nearly like growing to be to be a Frenchman. you could finished the criminal standards for French citizenship in some 365 days. even though it is going to likely be an excellent deal longer than that earlier yet another Frenchman might have the means to word which you're certainly one of his team. you nevertheless act and think of like an interloper." we've distinctive interpretations of scripture and distinctive books in our Bible as i'm specific others will element out. yet we've basically distinctive techniques of observing issues. In fairness to three of those "common Christians," a number of what we do seems frightening. people tend to hate what they do no longer understand or what scares them. a number of my fellow and properly-which ability Catholics permit you already know approximately our similarities. Respectfully, i might propose that we are so distinctive from "them" that we'd besides be in develop approximately it. Cool question, by using the way. Non-biased; no longer attempting to dis anybody.
