I'm a gay libertarian atheist and unlike other pussy atheists I am a staunch supporter of death penalty (for homicide crimes only).

First, it's an act of revenge. I don't see anything wrong with revenge when a life of innocent human being is taken. Don't bullshit me that life of a criminal is as sacred as a life of innocent person.

Second, by putting a murderer to death, we'll be sure he/she will never harm anybody again. Physical elimination of convicts is a protective measure to ensure the safety of innocent individuals.

Third, I don't want to spend my taxes to feed those thugs.

Whoever opposes death penalty is a pussy. Who is bloody with me?!!

I'm opposed. Every legal system if flawed, so the possibility of killing innocent people is inevitable. If you look at the number of people who are released from death row after nine or ten years because of new evidence, it's pretty scary. Also it targets the poor and minorities. Convicted murderers are something like three times as likely to get the death penalty if they can't afford a lawyer, and about twelve times as likely if the victim was white compared to when the victim is black. That's in the US.
I don't have the statistics on it, but I imagine the number of people killed by murderers who have escaped from maximum security prisons would be far lower than the number of people who have been wrongfully executed.

As for countries who have the death penalty for drug trafficking or apostasy, that's just messed up.

I'm on the border about it.

For the most part i'm against it, but I do feel that there are some circumstances where it's the only solution because the person is too unstable to function in society.

I do not see it as a form of punishment because that is obviously ridiculous..... You punish someone by taking their life..... but after their life is gone they fail to be conscious beings so it doesn't matter anymore........ I see it more as a way to maintain the safety of society to ensure this person never has the opportunity to repeat their crimes. What's the difference between letting someone die over a long period of time in a prison to serve a life sentence or just ending it sooner so that spot can be filled by someone who may actually learn from the prison experience & change his/her ways & eventually return to society to be a contributor instead of a criminal!?

I agree with Deke that there must be evidence beyond any doubts that the person is definitely guilty of the accused crime.

I'm not an atheist, but I think the death penalty is a violation of human rights.

No one is fit to judge in such an absolute manner.
There is also the possibility that someone innocent will be executed.
Surely it only takes one before it is an attrocity of immesurable proportions.
While it is only one life at a time, that one life is everything to the person who's life it is.

Murder is murder.
Proclaiming that its in the name of justice is not a good enough reason IMO and as I said, innocent people do get convicted now and again.

Although I am not opposed to the concept of the death penalty, until the Justice system has been reformed, and a poor man has equality in representation in the courts with a rich man,I will oppose it.

I am not atheist, but most Christians would consider me one. I am for the death penalty. However, I agree with Deke. There must be no trace of doubt that the person is guilty.

Enough people whose opinions I respect are opposed to it that I believe I should oppose it too.

Miscarriages of justice certainly show that it would result in a lot of innocent deaths.

But personally, if I was given the choice between a year or more in a hellhole prison and a nice needle, I know what I'd choose.

Death is far nicer then pain.

I'm against the death penalty. My parents both used to work in prisons and they said they'd rather die than have to live in one for life.

I'm against it. Life is precious and we have no right to take it from someone. Most people deserve a second chance and for the others death would be too easy. They should suffer more, like castration of rapers and convicted pedophiles. :)

In favor. But it needs to be less arbitrary. It's wrong that one person gets the death penalty for one murder, and then somebody else gets life for six murders.
