I have a 6 1/2 month old Saint Bernard pup. I try not to bathe him so often but after about a week after his bath he starts to really smell awful and the whole house smells like him (so we have to bathe him again). He is really getting big and more difficult to bathe each time. Help please. Thanks.

He doesnt roll in anything to make him stinky. This is the first dog I have ever owned that we have to bathe as often as we do. I wonder how well a grooming store would do for him?

We have already talked to the vet about the problem. He gave him a clean bill of health. I have tried the spray deoderants on him (last about a day). I guess I just have a stinky dog. :)

We wash our dogs once a week. He probley get to stinking after a few days because he probley sweats and tries to find a cool place to sit and sometimes he might find something a little stinky to lay on. it's normal to bathe your dog once a week though, especially if he's a inside dog!!!!! it will help with fleas a tick too , if everyother week or so use a flea and tick shampoo. But don't use it every week it will be to harsh on his skin!

I have two dogs, a sheltie and a mixed breed. The Sheltie needs to be bathed every 4 to 6 weeks or she gets a doggie odor. The mixed breed has only had two baths her entire 6 years of life. She just does not smell like a dog! You can bury your nose into her fur and no odor....its pretty amazing. It must be the breeds she a mix of. Anyway, even if you are using products handmade by your therapist, it could have an adverse effect on the dog and actually cause the dog to smell worse if you use something that irritates its skin. Brushing the dog thoroughly every day and using a grooming spray that can be found in a good pet store will also help with the doggie odor. There are also spray on products that are okay to use on a dog that take away odor. Dirty or infected ears can cause a dog to smell bad, as well as impacted anal glands.

First, take him to a vet to find out why he's so smelly.

True a lot of dogs have an odor - and large, hairy dogs are especially prone to stinkiness. But if he's really rank after just a week, then it might be something internal. It could be his food, for example. It could be a skin allergy like hot spots, etc. But whatever it is, rule out something health/diet related.

That said, while you're at the vet, discuss hygiene. Bathing a dog too often can strip his fur from essential oils as well as aggravate sensitive skin (both of which can contribute to smelly-ness) so your vet might be able to recommend a course of action to combat smelly-dog syndrome

Finally, you may have to simply accept the fact that you have a particularly smelly dog.

It's really just a matter of how often your dog needs to be bathed. If he's smelling up your whole house, he is definitely ready for a bath. Sounds like you'll be bathing your puppy about once a week.

One thing to remember though is that you don't want to wash your dog more often than he needs it because it can dry out his skin. And also use shampoo that is made to be sensitive to dogs' skin.

"Most dogs don't need a bath more than once a month. Bathing too frequently
can dry out the skin and coat.

As far as the smell, if you rub a dryer sheet over his body it should take the dog smell away. This is really helpful especially on rainy days.

i wouldn't wash your pup too frequently. its skin could become dry and its coat might lose its soft, shiny texture. i would say bath him/her once every few weeks. there are other alternatives to bathing... they sell dog powder that is suppose to act as a dry bath. there are also fragrance sprays you can use when brushing him/her that will help with the smell. and there are doggie wipes that you use to help with the smell of their fur. good luck!

I have found that a small pool in the back yard is the easiest way to bathe my large dogs. (German Sheppard & Black Lab) Is the dog rolling in something to make him smell?
