The key to this is the condiments. 3 & 4 year olds tend to be picky eaters. But..................lucky for you they eat anything off a stick.

Buy chicken, beef, mini franks and hamburger meat. Season them all liberally with salt and pepper, or my favorite adobo. Then put them all on skewers. I have made the burgers on the skewer, but it's easier to make mini burgers and let people skewer them after they are cooked.

Have the regular catsup & mustard. But add a cheese sauce, perhaps a chili cheese sauce for the hot dogs. For the chicken get a peanut sauce and bbq sauce. The key to this is cook them for about 5 minutes before you serve them. They will get thicker, easier to dip and yummier. People love Russian dressing in burgers! The beef sticks will probably be good on all of these, or you could do a Asian type of marinade before hand.

For side dishes make grilled corn. I don't know anyone who doesn't love corn on the cob. For the kids I suggest grilling the corn in the husk, but the adults may like the grilled taste. That's up to you. Giving people options like this may prove to be challenging. Also, a fresh veggie platter. Kids love to dip and adults love them as well. Also, I make a pasta salad that everyone loves, including children. The base is a box of tri colored rotini and a bottle of zesty italian dressing. To this you can add anything. Generally I add pepperoni, onions, peppers, and cheese (not grated, then the kids can't pick it out - they sell crumbles now which makes it easier then cutting up a hunk of cheese really small. I use a whole bag.) But I have also added olives, tomatoes, artichokes and perpperoncini. Just make sure that the pieces are big enough that the parents can make a portion of pasta without big chunks of "yucky" things.

Another favorite of mine is grilled pineapple. Just make skewers of pineapple, the kids can eat it raw and the adults can have it grilled. I know it sounds nasty, but it really is good. The kids can dip it in yogurt if they like and you could make a bourbon caramel sauce, although not necessary.

Hope your party is fun!

When you say BBQ I automagically think of things like chicken, ribs, brisket, pulled pork. I.e. Memphis in May food.

You maybe thinking of something off a grill?

For adults, ribs would be the easiest/cheapest BBQ thing to make. Brisket or pulled pork is a long process. Pre-cook the ribs in the oven - using baby backs, peel of the membrane off the rack. Brush with liquid smoke, apply your rub, bake/covered for 2 hours at 250 degrees in a pan with about 1" of water. Wrap them in foil. When your about ready to eat, heat them up on the "grill" with your bbq sauce. Cut them apart and serve.

Kids might like ribs, but I suspect hot dogs is what they will want.

If you use the method outlined above, it will be easier to cook both the ribs and hot dogs/hamburgers on a grill at the same time. Hint - go easy on the salt in your rub.

Another idea is beer can chicken.

Your best bet is to keep it simple if you want to be sure the kids like the food. Me? I'd BBQ hot dogs and corn on the cob or BBQ some pre-marinated fajita meat and serve it up in flour or fresh corn tortillas. BBQ sliced onion rounds and green & red peppers, too. Set out a nice spread of condiments to build your own fajita. The kids would enjoy creating their own masterpiece. Serve some queso and salsa fresca and tortilla chips as an appetizer.

It's hard to go wrong with ribs. Everybody loves them and since they come with a built in handle they are fairly kid friendly. However, be advised that each and every kid will wind up with BBQ sauce on their party clothes so make sure you have them dress casual.

As for sides: corn on the cob is a good choice. Cole slaw and potato salad are also traditional. However it is doubtful that the kids will touch them.

chicken is always good and brats or hot dogs, go for the all beef what kid does not eat a hot dog you can also get fresh fruit and slice it up instead of a fruit salad in case any kids have specific food allergies. My family always makes marinated chicken or pork chops all you need is a can of pineapples slices or chunks and soy sauce empty all the juice from the can of pineapples in to a big bowl and add the soy sauce to your liking and then add the raw meat and let the meat marinate in the mixture for at least one hour. My daughter is 4 years old and loves it.

Try Van Kamps Hickory and Brown Sugar Baked Beans if you don't make them from scratch -- they are THAT good!
I like to make Calico Beans for BBQ get-togethers (and never have leftovers).
Chicken salad made with BBQ Chicken (try the deli at your supermarket is good.
If you have a big grill and room, foil wrapped sweet corn with the husks on (silks out) (soak the ears for 10 minutes in cold water after you clean them and before foil-wrapping) served with lots of butter and salt (their choice; and its just GREAT plain!).
A nice veggie tray with a sour cream/Ranch dressing mix is finger food and sneaks in more veggies (try baby carrots, pea pods, chopped broccoli and cauliflowers, baby pickles and olives and some bell pepper rings for the adults and unwary kidlets.
Jell-O with mini-marshmellows and CoolWhip for dessert. Or maybe cupcakes. Or both?
How much time have you got?! And how many people are you serving?
Do you still have time to ask your guests to make it a potluck? Good luck, sweetie!

MMMMM, BBQ baby peas in the bottle, or how about some nice carrots...
Okay I'm kidding.
These are very young kids, so hmmm...
Hot dogs, no barbeque sauce, or atleast very light. get cheese hot dogs, do not let them burn or the kids will hate em.
Hamburgers, with dill relish, no mustard, most kids, unless it was me, hate mustard...
Lots of ketchup though, then you can see how good your Tide really works to get the stains out...
Try to do something like you might see Emeril do.
You know Put some fruit on the bobby...
Mango, peaches, etc. ....
Then for the adults, oh my gosh!!!
Ribs, barbeque ribs, pork ribs, if you like pork, are the BEST!!!
Mmmm BBQ. making my mouth water.
Have fun.
Get some skewers, and put together some shis-ka-bob...too.
Kids like that.
I don't know, like something yummy for kids.
Oh not much help there am I .
Do like a kiwi, mango, strawberry shis-ka-bob for the kids.
I know it sounds crazy, but it may begin some sort of strange BBQ tradition.
Crazy-
Peace.

I like what Ryan said, the TGIFridays idea, with jack daniels in the BBQ, but put it on Ribs, the taste will be a bit strong on chicken unless you have it in a lil dip saucer. I would do Hot Dogs for the kids, keep it simple cause they are messy lil bastards!
