Open water towers attract bird droppings and tend to collect leaves that rot (and leave organic compounds that have a bad interaction with chlorine). They are not good for potable water for that reason.

Towers are usually made of wood, reinforced concrete, and steel. Don't forget that you need piping to fill and empty the tank and a support framework for any tanks that are elevated above the ground.

Wood is the cheapest to buy and erect (sort of like building a barrel with banding to hold it together) but have the shortest life.

Steel ones are best for tall towers. They are typically cylindrical ("standpipes") with steel plates welded together and a dome top (with an access hatch on top.). They are built from the ground up. Other steel ones are spheroids with steel plates formed to be welded together on the top of a central water pipe. All steel ones need periodic repainting.

Concrete ones are more expensive and are built from the ground up just as a building foundation would be. They typically have an access hatch on top. If well made they require painting only for appearance since they can not rust.

Washington is a large and all know town and is definitely valuable send a holiday or perhaps visit that city. with hotelbye you will discover more. One of many symbols of Washington and the entire America could be the famous White House, the state house of the President of the United States. Considering the rural population of 250, and percapita consumption of 200 litre/day, your water supply system is to cater for 50,000 litre per day.
Assuming that you are going to use bore wells for lifting the water to a water tower for distribution by Gravity, a water tower of capacity 50 cubic meter(one days storage) is required, considering borwell pump capacity of 10 cubicmeter/hr.
Height of water tower required is not less than 10 metre to maintain pressure head of 0.5 kg/cmsq. at the remotest house, allowing line pressure drop of 0.5 kg/cm sq.

so, your requirement is one water tower ,capacity 50 cubic meter, height 10 meter .

If you project schedule is not very tight, a concrete tower will be best choice. A steel tower and tank made of pressed steel sheets is to be resorted to in case quick construction and lower cost is more important than sevice life .
Wooden tower is not a feasible solution in either case, considering the capacity and height of tower.
So, the solution is one of the following :-
1 . Concrete tower cylindrical top 6 m dia x 1.5 meter.(ht) x .250 m thk) supported by concrete columns (M-25 concrete)on concrete foundation. Many beatiful shape is possible.

2. Pressed steel tank top, rectangular, 6m x 6 m x 1.5 m (G.I Sheet 6 mm thk) standing on welded steel structure made of ISMC 150 and ISMB 200 .

The open top tank is unsuitable for drinking water service and hence closed top type is to be considered.

About cost ,
The rates prevalent at the village location is to be considered. Concrete work varies considerably from place to place .

Cost of steel works = Rs . 30, 000/. Tons.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

Depends on how big.

Small, use a wooden barrel
Large, requires more capabilities than a school project.... they are usually made of steel, welded and painted.
