One can put metal in a microwave. Always see that the amount (mass) of food is larger than the mass of the metal. And be careful that the metal does not touch the sides of the microwave, as this causes arcing. When putting jars of baby food to heat up, see that the lid is screwed loose.
The door of the microwave oven keeps the microwaves from escaping the appliance. Plastic can also be used, but not for foods that are sweet, (high sugar content) and fatty or oily. These foods heat up so hot, that the plastic can melt. Also not for heating up for too long. Melamine plastic gets very hot in the microwave, but the food inside the container stays cold.
When putting plastic containers in the microwave, do not put a spoon in it, because it attracts the heat and gets so hot, it could damage the plastic.
Foil can also be used in the microwave. Again, not to touch the sides. Foil is usually used when one uses a square container. The corners of the container are covered with foil to prevent the food in the corners from heating faster than in the centre.

Wood is ok for the most part, unless it is totally soaked thick wood. The water will heat up and can cause some damage when it converts to steam. The kebab sticks are too thin for anything like that to happen, though.
Any porous crockery is unsafe as well, for the same reason. Metals are also not a good idea, in addition to metallic etching on plates.
Oddly enough, grapes can cause some interesting effects if cut the right way...a ball of plasma can erupt from it. Check this out:

The wooden sticks will work. Plastic plates can go in, as long as you're not cooking them too long. Styrofoam sometimes melts. Keep away from metals and gold leaf; they can vreate sparks. Also, do not microwave things that are not food: socks, sneakers, pets, younger brothers.

The safest would be look for the microvable sign at the bottom. The general rule would be nothing shining, including gold lining. Plastic plates or container made specially for re-heat is ok but it's advisable not to place dry oily stuff as the oil will melt the plastic. Wood or paper is ok.

i wouldn't put wood in a microwave again, i left the wooden stick in my leg wax whilst i heated it in the microwave, it went very black an smoke poured out of the microwave when i opened it, so don't be lazy and cook then in the oven. i cook all my meats on a George Foreman grill, best thing i'v ever bought

I don't know if wood can go in the microwave, but NEVER put metel in like forks, spoons and knives to name a few. Usually dishes will say "Microwave safe" on the bottom underside of the dish. When in doubt, don't put it in the microwave!

No metal at all should go in a microwave!
Other wise you are at severe microwave-radiation risks!
You can get things such as tumours in cells from micro-waves. (not the ovens, the actual waves!)
Things should say microwavable on them, check the back of the container!

Wood can go in the microwave, but you should soak the sticks in water first, then skewer the food. The skewers should always be soaked in water before cooking, especially on the grill, it keeps them from catching on fire

Wood has the potential to cause a fire, and, as a rule, should NOT be used in a microwave oven.
