I am not a stay at home mom. I work a full time job, however I do occasionally have a day off during the week (Obviously today). I know that on these days, me and my 3 yr. old have no set routine. I get up and see my older child off to school, but then me and my daughter sleep in till we feel like getting up, usually between 8:30-9:30. Even if I have things that I need to take care of, whether it is clean house, run errands or whatever, I don't have a set schedule. I just do it when I feel like it. My daughter watches TV, colors, plays with dolls, swings on her swingset or whatever. I find that these days are so relaxed and laidback compaired to having to work a full time job outside the home, punching a time clock. I just wonder if stay at home moms actually try to have some type of schedule everyday. When you don't really have to, why would you want to deal with that stress of a set schedule?

Nope, I don't have a set schedule. I just do things when they need to be done!

I'm a stay at home mom (I have a 9 month old) and I have somewhat of a set schedule but it is definitely not set in stone. Usually, I use the morning hours to run errands, clean etc and then we do whatever we want in the afternoon. We have lunch whenever we are ready but I do try and have dinner ready by 6:00. I try and make it a point to do something different everyday so it doesn't get routine. I've done the 50 hours/week thing and am well aware how boring a routine can be!

If I was you on your day off I would do exactly what your doing. I'm sure you deserve to not have a schedule every once in a while but, I do have a pretty set schedule. If I didn't my smaller children would never get a nap and I would never get any alone time or get the house cleaned up. My older children get home around 3:30 everyday from school and if my little kids didn't nap it would be a screaming fest all evening long. Also my 3 year old is VERY ENERGETIC and thrives on a schedule.

You don't have to have a set schedule. It's your day off, you enjoy it however you see fit. If it's a beautiful sunny day, take off to the park or beach (depending on where you live) with your child for a picnic lunch and some play time. If the weather is lousy, stay in and work on a project or just watch movies. If the house needs sprucing up, do this in the morning and get it out of the way, then do what you want to do with the rest of you day. This is YOUR down time, you have the right to relax and enjoy it!

If a routine works for you, then establish one that fits your lifestyle. What time do you like to go to bed? Are there activities you like to do? Your baby? Is there a time of day when your baby would usually nap? My son has autism and routines and schedules help him cope with the frustrations of not communicating well and the difficulty of transitioning. Having dinner at a different time each night, using a different type of transportation each day, etc., because I don't want to live within what someone else thinks is drudgery doesn't work well for us. Have a general schedule, but one that is flexible enough to allow for changes when you think they're necessary.

well, I cannot speak for other stay at home moms but I have 5 children, we don't really have a schedule, we just seem to get done most of what we need to in a day,, I was never a routine type person, but i can see how some moms might be, It's nice you get a day off in the middle of the week, I bet you and your kids really enjoy that time,

During the school week I get up at 7, get my two older kids up for school and get them ready. Leave the house to take them to school around 7:30. Drop them off, come home and wake my 4 yr old up if she's not up already, take my husband to work, feed the little one. Brush teeth (shower if needed) and then I more or less just play with her until 11 when I feed her lunch and then bring her to school for 11:45. After that I run errands and come home and clean if I have time otherwise I pick up my two younger kids from school at 3. Come home and if I haven't gotten my chores done then I do them then. At 4 I go get my oldest from school, come home make supper. The kids go out to play and I finish chores or whatever is still left. At 5:30 I go get my husband come home and usually play with the kids until 6:15 when I call one of the younger ones in for shower. It's usually about 6:40 when the other comes in for her shower. At 7 we sit and read a couple books and then the younger ones go to bed. Then I help our oldest with any homework if he needs help. Or I try to get something to eat for myself. And then it's time to spend with my husband. It usually makes busy days but hey I sleep good at night. Summers coming and I'm kinda looking forward to the more laidback days but we'll see :-). Good luck

I don't have a schedule with my 1 year old either. Depending on the time we wake up, I'll feed her and then I'll eat. She'll play with the clean clothes I have folded up in the laundry basket or she'll drag around her toys, or dance to the music I play. if we have to go somewhere she'll get in the shower with me and then we'll get dressed, I'll put something in her sippy cup, grab a diaper and let her led the way to the truck.
You shouldn't worry about a schedule, you are home from work...enjoy your day off..you follow enough schedules with your older child and at work.

i myself is a stay at home mom.... i love it, i worked for 12 yrs then i quit my job and got pg... and im glad i did... i have a 4 yr old son, we get up when we want, and i also take care of my 5 yr old nephew, they play i do a lil housework here and there, play with them, then we might go to the park, or whatever i am not going to tie myself down to a "rountine" of doing housework this and that cause these days i will never get back he starts to school next yr so all this time i have had and enjoyed with him will be over... then ill have to get in a rountine of cleaning the house more...lol... but i think any couple that can possible afford for the mom to stay home needs to do that.... it is the best rewarding job ever, not the easiest but the best... afterall i got to see his first steps, first words, whereas i know my cousin has a daycare adn she gets to see all those kids thangs first not there parents and she has to let on like they never done that b4....

I need routine, and my kids thrive in a structered environment. we all wake up and go to bed at the same times every day; we eat meals, together, at the same times, everyday, and our days follow a regular (thought not rigid) schedule.
It sort of looks like this:

5:30am Mom and Dad wake, shower, fold laundry, walk dog, start breakfast
6:30am Kids wake, shower, dress, eat, yoga
7am Dad leaves for work
8:30 Take son to school
9:00 (tend to elderly realtive's needs) Daughter colors, engages in solitary play
9:30 Park/playdate/errands, etc.
11:45-12:30 Lunch/nap (while I do chores and prep dinner)
3:30 Pick up son, start homework, get dinner ready
5:15 Dad home

I have a 4 month old and a 2 yr old. We dont have a set schedule at all, we do what we want, when we want. With one exception, I always try to have my 2yr old down for his nap between 1 and 1:30 pm. It makes everyone's day more pleasant!
