Giant makes a good bike and they have offerings in almost all price cateogies. Compare them against bikes from Trek and Specialized. They all have comparable models.

Giant is fine, as are more than a dozen others. Far more important than the brand is determining whether the bike fits you, and whether it will be appropriate for the type of riding you intend to do. Any reputable bike shop should be able to help you with that if you are shopping for something new. If the bike you are considering is used, take it to a shop to have it's condition checked. If they're friendly they should also be able to tell you if it comes close to fitting you, but don't expect them to take the time with it that they would if you were buying a new one. Fit, service, advice, and so forth is part of what you get when you buy a bike from a knowledgeable shop.

Giant is a brand that has been around for a number of years. Many of the "established" brands were in fact re badged Giant cycles. Merida also built for other brands.
The designer of the gold medal winning persuit bike in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics/Chris Boardman, is Mike Burrows, who was head hunted by Giant, for his vision in designing bikes. The OCR range of road bikes, as used by the ONCE team were designed by Mike. In short, Giant are an excellent choice.
