Bob that sounds like a cool cat to have. I think its because they just dont like water thats all. I was told by someone that the cat might have a stiff muscle in its legs but I dont think thats true at all. Maybe no1 knows for sure but good luck.

It depends on their upbringing. My family had a cat who didn't mind water, like when she got a bath b/c she was given one periodically since she was a kitten. It's all about exposure, IMHO.
And for the record, cats CAN swim in the water. If you don't believe me, watch a cat fall into the pool or a river, etc. They look pissed off, but they "doggie paddle" and do just fine.

Cat's can swim. They usually aren't all that fond of water. Many cats enjoy water and some engage in fishing and swimming. But, it has to be on their own terms — being picked up by two human hands and dunked in a sink full of water is not on the cat's "own terms."
Tigers spend a great deal of time in the water/

Most cats are afraid of water.
Maybe people presumed that and for years, owner allow cats to clean themselves.
No one actually trained cats to swim.
We all know cats to be the cleanest animals.
My Bengal kitten has web paws and she can swim and loves water.
I think if you train them they can love water.
I don't know if you notice that most cats when they drink water they put their paw in and drink water.
Mine does that.
If their ancestors come from wild and living by the river.
If you watch big cats drinking by the river, they do put their paws in the water to drink. Must be keeping out for enemies and they can hear vibration in the water.
So I suppose our cats do the same.
Hope this is useful information for you.

Cats can swim if it comes to a life and death situation but they prefer not to. It could have something to do with being out of their element. The are land animals and climbers, that is their strength, given to them by nature. In the water they are at the mercy of who or whatever.

All cats can swim. They just don't like it, because they don't need to by nature. They clean themselves. Some types of cats, though, and some individual cats, like to swim or bathe or even soak in water! (Not my cat-lol!)

most cats can swim, but do not like water they aren't really keen on having to reclean their whole body. alot of cats do ok with being bathed, I had a cat that didn't mind beign bathed esp if he was hot, my cat now doesn't want to be submerged in water but loves to get in the tub and lay in the remaining water so her belly gets wet

I don't know.
My cat jumped in my lake after studing a fishing bobber for about 5 minutes near the shore. She swam back to shore after swatting on the the bobber a few times, but she acted like it didn't bother her.
