I know of Wells's "red weed" (from Mars), and Yggdrasil (from mythology), and the plants of Pern (from McCaffrey's stories), but... are there any others you might have heard of? Even normal plants with an important rôle in significant stories.

How about The trouble with lichen by John Wyndam Shall I compare thee to a rose Shakespeare, Daffodils by Wordsworth, the Scarlet Pimpernel, purely fictional aliantha from the science fantasy stories by Stephen Donaldson , or the Ents in Lord of the Rings by Tolkein. both the latter have an ancient connection in thier worlds to a spirit of the forest which are based on the green man of ancient pagan religions. There are so many a good search will find loads of them for you.

Great question! I'll add Gundelia tournefortii, which was supposedly the 'crown of thorns' worn by jesus.

"According to Dr. Avinoam Dannin, Professor of Botany at the Hebrew University of Israel (1988), pollen grains of this species have been identified from the Shroud of Turin. The density of pollen grains is much higher than random samples from the air, suggesting that blooming plants of Gundelia tournefortii were placed on the Shroud during its flowering period of February to May. Some biblical scholars have also suggested that this spiny plant may have been the actual "crown of thorns" worn by Jesus."

At Charlecote Park in Warwickshire, near Stratford (a National Trust property) there is a whole garden planted with plants mentioned in the works of Shakespeare. Regrettably I can't remember any of them as I haven't visited for many years. If you are near, have a visit.

Triffids from 'Day of the Triffids' by John Wyndham is my first thought. Not actual plants, but what about 'The Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck? The tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden is another one from mythology.

By far my favourite is the plant from 'A Scanner Darkly', a fantastic book adapted into a brilliant film, it concerns an extremely powerful drug called Substance D, that destroys the people who use it, and sometimes even the people who try to stop it. It is so addictive "You're either on it, or you haven't tried it yet".

The drug comes from a little blue plant with the latin name "Mors Ontologica" which means "death of being" or even "the being of death itself". Quite harrowing, but very powerful.

I reccommend the film.

From "Hamlet"

"A violet in the youth of primy nature" (1.3.7). This, says Laertes, is how Ophelia should think of Hamlet's feelings for her. Laertes is willing to concede that Hamlet may be sincere, but his "favor" is like the violet--quick to bloom, quick to die.
