Kimber SVT it's a really really nice rifle, it's extremely accurate, very nice trigger, and very well balanced. If you want go semi automatic get a ruger 1022 and buy a fluted 920 barrel for it, a drop in trigger kit, and a new stock. If it's not about ammo costs you can't beat an ar-15 they're fun to shoot, amazingly accurate, and you can turn them into anything. For pistols I would suggest a ruger mk2 cause they're good and very cheap, a sig trailside, or a S&W model 41 which is the most expensive but an amazeing .22 pistol. If you don't care about price get a 1911 , kimber's are good, I like the springfield trp operator, I own a dan wesson partiot expert and love it. But you can target shoot with anything, it all depends on what you are planning on doing with it later. I target shoot and shoot IPSC with my sig 226r and my glock 22. Don't believe that .45 is more accurate then 9mm it depends on what firearm the bullet is comming out of, caliber has nothing to do with it. Hope that helped

There are any number of pistols or rifles that would work, but honestly, there's one round that fits your needs precisely, and you can find cheap, servicable firearms that would both fire that round.
Get a pistol and a rifle that both shoot .22LR rounds. Both are perfect for your needs, and if they are chambered the same, you can use the same rounds in both, obviously. Plus, .22LR is really cheap, and the firearms are not expensive either. I'm a big fan of Ruger, so maybe the Ruger 22/45 Mark III for the pistol, and the Ruger 10/22 for the rifle. The 10/22 is an especially fine and popular firearm. I have the links below, respectively. *For some reason I can't get the second link to link, but just go to the first link and go to the rifles section and choose autoloading and the 10/22 is near the top.
Sorry, I also just noticed you wanted to hit out to 200 yards with the rifle. To be honest, you don't have to shoot at varmints from that distance, as you can get much closer quite easily enough. However, if you really do need to shoot that far, consider a .223 caliber rifle. Technically you could use any caliber rifle, although it could be overkill obviously. I have a cousin who shoots groundhogs w/ his .45-70 Govt. That's a mess. Anyways, .223 will run you fairly cost effectively, as has been mentioned.

For target shooting, and just fun plinking, it is hard to go wrong with a .22 LR. Ruger's Single-Six, and MkII Target would be fine choices at modest prices. Probably the best .22 Target Revolver ins the Smith & Wesson M-17, if you can find an older one, or the newer model M-617.
A Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin M-39 would be great choices for a .22 rifle, but if you really want to stretch ranges to 200 yards and more, you need a centerfire. A .223 bolt-action of some sort would be good, but since I'm not a varmint hunter, I can't make a recommendation based on experience.
Good Hunting,

Just about any 22 caliber centerfire will work, and if you're not stretching the range too far past 200, the old 222 Remington would be great, though most folks these days seem to choose 223 or 22-250, which will stretch your range to 300 or 400 yards, respectively. The choice of rifle is a personal one, but Remington and Sako tend to be most accurate out of the box. For a handgun, I'd just get a 22 revolver, perhaps one of the Ruger offerings.

Pistol - Browning Buck Mark .22 (nothing else should even be considered for light target practice) There is no other .22 pistol that is more reliable or accurate....period.
Rifle - For 200 yard varmint shooting, I would suggest a Savage .223 bolt action, a Remington 700 .223 bolt action, or a DPMS or Bushmaster AR15 .223 Semi-Auto Varmint rifle.
The AR15 will run you about $1100.00, so if you are running on a budget, go with the Remington or Savage Bolt Actions. Actually, any caliber you choose should still be a Remington 700 or Savage if you are going to buy a bolt action rifle. I suggested a .223, because you can buy surplus ammunition very cheap on the internet. Surplus .223 ammo will run you about $5.00/bx, where as store bought ammo will run you about $15.00/bx. If you go with any varmint caliber other than .223, your only option is store bought ammo.

For the pistol, a 9mm is cheap, a .22 is cheaper. for 200 yard rifles, go with a .223. I know people are going to say a .22, but that just doent cut it at 200 yards, and i really dont think a 22 mag is great at 200, its good, dont get me wrong, but theres better.
By the way cowboy, rifles are legal in EVERY state, but not on certain game.

weapons are not risky, all people is. There are categories of skill and there are commerce offs. There are some handguns that are very nearly cannons, cringe is merely too helpful for any extreme use even with the incontrovertible fact that. comparable with shotguns, they used to flow each and each of how all the way down to 4 gauge (unlawful now) yet are you able to administration something that fires a slug that weighs 0.5 as much as you do? No. 12 gauge is standard not via fact of skill on my own. It has good skill, OKI administration and would not weigh too lots. i want to propose a pump action shotgun such via fact the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870. Pump action is sweet via fact merely the sound of it makes human beings poop their pants. Get you a Mossy 500 for one hundred greenbacks and a dozen rounds of 00 buckshot and your waiting to flow.
